On May 19, Congressman Dan Kildee announced that nine mid-Michigan hospitals will receive at least $107 million in federal grants to support health care workers and health systems on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic.

For the past seven years, Krystal Jo’s Diner/Bike Giveaway has put a free bicycle in the hands of a child in Flint and surrounding towns within Genesee County. Nearly 5,000 children have benefited from this program and due to COVID 19, fundraising has become very challenging and funds are exhausted, according to Tony Tucker, owner of the Flint diner and founder of the Bike Giveaway.

It’s that time of year again! Catholic Charities is gearing up for their St. Patrick’s Day Box Lunch Sale on Tuesday, March 17. This annual fundraiser is a Flint tradition, offering a box lunch featuring a sandwich, stacked high with corned beef and Swiss on rye, chips, coleslaw, a pickle and treat – all for only $8.  Drive-thru pick up is between 10am-1pm, in front of Catholic Charities main office at 901 Chippewa St., Flint. Free delivery in Genesee County is offered for orders of 15 or more. On Saturday, March 7, from 6 to 10pm the Reuben Guerra Benefit to Fight Cancer will take place at The Jewel of Grand Blanc Country Club. The benefit asks for a minimum donation of $10 per person.

Old Newsboys of Flint Director Chris Hamilton passed away on Sunday, March 1. He was 73.

On Saturday, February 29, Adopt-A-Pet Fenton hosts the annual Wags & Whiskers in the Woods fundraiser at Camp Copneconic. The event begins at 5pm. Tickets are $95 to attend and are available for purchase at Adopt-A-Pet or online at WagsAndWhiskersAAP.com. This year’s theme is “Hollywood Impawsonators” and guests are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Hollywood star or character for a chance to win prizes.

On Thursday, February 27, Genesee County Habitat for Humanity will hold their 30-year anniversary banquet at the Holiday Inn Gateway Center. Doors open at 5pm. Individual tickets to the event are $75.

On Friday, February 7, The Captain’s Club at Woodfield (10200 Woodfield Dr., Grand Blanc) will host “A Night to Give Back: Honoring Local Service Heroes” from 5-9pm. General admission to the event is $30 with a percentage of all proceeds to be donated to United Veterans of Michigan, Fenton Firefighters Charities, Concern Over Police Safety and Grand Blanc Educational Foundation.

There’s still time to sign up for the Fenton Polar Plunge hosted by Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Michigan this Saturday, Feb. 1, from 11am-3pm. The event, which is held at the Fenton Moose Lodge, 2245 Sonora Drive in Fenton Township, attracts hundreds of people every year. Shuttle service is provided from four area businesses: Fenton Winery & Brewery, Fenton Lanes, Miller Industries LLC and The Fireplace. On Wednesday, January 29, LAFF Pathway presents the 2020 Flannel & Furs Fundraiser from 6-9pm at the Fenton Winery & Brewery. This annual event is the main fundraiser for the LAFF Pathway organization. Attendees can wear casual jeans and a flannel or jazz it up with glam and furs. Fundraiser participants will enjoy a silent auction, cocktails, hors d’ oeuvres, desserts, a grand prize drawing, and live entertainment and music by Driven. In December, the Wreaths Across America organization, with the help of thousands of caring volunteers across the country, held wreath laying ceremonies at the graves of our nation’s veterans from the Revolutionary War to present day conflicts. Tomorrow, January 25, Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly will host their Wreaths Across American clean-up event from 10:00-11:30am snow, rain or shine. Take the time this weekend to join other volunteers in this endeavor and show your appreciation for all that the veterans do and have done for us.

This weekend presents an opportunity to lend support to a prized local charity, and institution.
