As winter approaches, many people experience a decrease in spirits and energy levels – a phenomenon often referred to as seasonal mood changes or the “winter blues.” Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that strikes at the same time every year, usually in the fall and winter, and affects individuals differently, with some experiencing more severe symptoms than just a little downturn. Anxieties, lethargy and food cravings are some of the symptoms of SAD, which affects an estimated 10% of the population to varying extents.

In our fast-paced lives, getting sick is something no one has time for, yet it’s an unfortunate reality that can disrupt everything from work to personal plans. Thankfully, a flu shot or COVID vaccine takes just minutes to check off your to-do list, and they could save you from not only days of illness but also from potential complications that may arise. We spoke with Sam Englender, Physician Assistant at Hamilton Community Health Network’s Main Clinic, who sheds light on the crucial role that flu and COVID vaccines play in preventing serious illness, and how they can keep you healthy and resilient throughout this season and beyond.

Dr. Jeffrey S. Commonly known as the “winter blues,” Seasonal Affective Disorder – or SAD – is a regular depression disorder with symptoms that begin in the fall and continue into winter months. Sometimes, SAD symptoms appear in the spring or early summer and cause an unhappy mood with low energy. Those most likely to have it are younger females and those with family histories of depression, bipolar disorder or SAD. Sufferers experience increased appetite and needing to sleep for longer periods.
