Rylee Harmon is a phenomenal person and a true leader who will be entering her senior year this fall, said Principal Wesley Webster. She is a vital member of the Principal Advisory Council, and her dedication to the school community is unmatched. Whether she is helping organize staff appreciation events for bus drivers, assembling snack bags for students during state testing, or stepping into the spotlight as one of the student emcees welcoming incoming freshmen, Rylee leads with enthusiasm and compassion.
Rylee also is an outstanding scholar, maintaining a 4.086 cumulative GPA. Her heart for service shines just as brightly outside the classroom, where she routinely volunteers her time to support students in the school as a member of the Hope Squad and younger students throughout the district at West Shore Elementary. Rylee also volunteers with multiple youth groups, where she serves as a high school leader. Even when facing personal adversity this past year, Rylee’s resilient spirit never wavered.
Describe a typical day.
During the school year, I wake up and start my day by reading my Bible before getting ready for school. Then I drive to school for my classes. After school, I usually go to the gym and get some work done while I’m there. Then I head home, eat dinner, and finish any schoolwork I have left.
Who has been your biggest inspiration and why?
My biggest inspiration has, by far, been my school librarian and Young Life leader, Maryalice Taneyhill. She has supported and uplifted me since my sophomore year, and she is someone I constantly strive to be like because of her kindness and generosity.
Which sport do you like the best?
I grew up watching and playing softball. It has been the sport I have loved since kindergarten. I haven’t been able to play in almost a year and a half because I had to undergo two shoulder surgeries, but I still stay involved with my team and enjoy cheering on my teammates.
Where do you see yourself in five and 10 years?
Because I have a passion for serving kids, I hope to become either a registered nurse or an occupational therapist specializing in pediatrics. In the next few years, I hope to be in college, and in 10 years, I hope to be settled into my career.
What are your college plans?
I want to stay in Michigan for college and hope to attend Wayne State University with the goal of specializing in pediatrics after graduation.
What’s your advice for incoming freshmen?
Savor every single moment. When you start freshman year, it feels like you have so much time left to make memories, but time truly flies by. Take the time to hang out with friends, go to dances, and attend sporting events. Those are moments you can never get back, so enjoy them.
