We survived January!
At the time of this writing, it seems like everyone has been waddling around town bundled up like marshmallows, braving single-digit temps while dodging relentless snowflakes. (Seriously, when will it stop?) On the bright side, winter sports fans are living their best lives, and the annual Polar Plunge on Lake Fenton (February 1) promised plenty of frozen fundraising for thrill-seekers. What can I say? I guess I’m always looking for that silver lining.
This month, you’ll want to check out our “7 Questions” feature with Dr. Shan Jackson, one of Flint’s best-dressed health pros and a My City contributing writer. She’s got a resume that’ll make your head spin (in a good way). Curious? Read on to learn more about this fascinating Flintite.
Speaking of action, we take a behind-the-scenes look at the Law Enforcement Regional Training Academy (LERTA) in Fenton Township. This isn’t just any academy – there, future officers gear up to protect and serve, under the authority of the Mott Community College Department of Public Safety. Peek into the rigorous training process in this issue.
Since 2017, my good friend Judge Duncan Beagle has been busy with his passion project, the Vehicle City Sports Committee. This nonprofit is shaking things up in Flint and Genesee County, championing high school athletes and turning Atwood Stadium into a prime venue for youth and amateur events. Get the full scoop inside.
So, it’s the “month of love” – and this is our annual bridal issue. Fun fact: Turns out Gen Z is keeping the dream of “I do” alive (according to surveys), with marriage still a goal for most. You’ll find expert advice on rings, gowns, and much more, plus an interesting dive into historical weddings celebrated at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Downtown Flint.
As February rolls in, we also celebrate Black History Month, and the Flint Institute of Arts is shining a spotlight on African American artists with two must-see exhibitions featuring Romare Bearden and Judy Bowman. Learn more about these unique showcases inside. And, we have coverage of the community’s annual celebrations honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
While it’s far too cold to frolic outdoors, I suggest you grab a blanket, cozy up on the couch and spend some quality time with My City.
