Starting Friday, February 14, the MW Gallery in Downtown Flint will open the “Examining Identity Construction” exhibit during art walk. The new exhibit features portraiture, scenes from everyday life and works that confront racial myths and stereotypes. Explore the dynamics of identity and the visual representation of African Americans. Artists include Robert Arneson, Camille Billops, Sanford Biggers, Mark Steven Greenfield, Ayana Jackson, Whitfield Lovell, Kehinde Wiley, Pat Ward Williams and more. As an added bonus, “Kevin Collins’ African/Jazz Trio” will be performing love songs for Valentine’s Day from 6:30-8:30pm.

Our Champion Flint City Bucks are set to begin their second year at Atwood Stadium in defense of the USL2 National Championship. The Bucks won the championship last year at home in front of a league record crowd and look to repeat the experience.
With a 5-3 victory over the Oshawa Generals on the road this past Sunday, the Flint Firebirds have extended their franchise best win streak to 10 games. The Firebirds find themselves just 2-points behind Saginaw for the lead in the OHL’s West Division. The Firebirds’ 66-points puts them in 4th place overall in the Western Conference, just 5-points away from conference leaders Kitchener (whom the Firebirds beat 5-3 in Flint during the current winning streak). The Firebirds play one more game on the road this Friday at rivals Saginaw – a huge game for both teams in their quest to win the West Division. Then, the team returns home this upcoming Saturday for a tilt against the Guelph Storm on Flint Tropics Night!
Two days twice a year, families and friends can enjoy one of Michigan’s premiere outdoor activities, Michigan Fishing, for FREE! The 2020 Free Fishing Weekends are scheduled February 15-16 and June 13-14. All fishing license fees will be waived for two days. A Recreational Passport will NOT be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites during Free Fishing Weekend. Residents and out-of-state visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations will still apply.
Fall in love with the Fenton Community Orchestra this Valentine’s Day. The orchestra is celebrating its 10th anniversary of being part of the Fenton community. They are celebrating the occasion with a Valentine’s Day Concert on Friday, February 14 at 8pm. Visit the Fenton High School Ruby Zima Auditorium, for an evening of classical and movie music. There will be door prizes cake, cookies, a gift for each attendee and more!
On Friday, February 14, Greater Flint Arts Council will open their African American Artists of Michigan All Media Exhibition. This much-anticipated annual exhibition features fantastic art from throughout the state. The gallery will officially open during this month’s second Friday art walk and will feature a reception in honor of our State’s talented African American Artists from 6-9pm. The reception is free and open to the public. Food and beverages will be offered, and guests will be entertained by the live music of Carl Buckner. The reception and Exhibition will be held at the GFAC building downtown.

Saturday, February 8, is National Boy Scouts Day. This day was created to honor the anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America by newspaperman, William Dickson Boyce in 1910. Since its founding the Boy Scouts of America, have helped millions of young boys and men do good deeds, learn survival skills and develop a high-character foundation. Now, the Boy Scouts organization is open to both young men and young women to learn and grow with a “Scout’s Honor.”

This is your chance to experience what the animals that live at For-Mar Nature Preserve & Abortorium see at night. Join a naturalist on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 8pm for a full moon hike and see firsthand how beautiful and peaceful the park is after dark. Full moon hikes are offered every month at For-Mar. Cost is $4 per person. You must register by Friday, Feb. 7.
Share Art Genesee, a program created by the Greater Flint Arts Council (GFAC), recently awarded 24 county art organizations with grants totaling $440,000. The grant award amounts ranged from $27,000 to $2,044.
