Kettering University, the school well-known for its ties to the automotive industry and its engineering programs, quietly launched a Pre-Med program in 2008. Although still a surprise to many, Kettering’s Pre-Med has been bulldogging its students into med school at an outstanding acceptance rate according to program coordinator, Dr. Stacy Seeley. The program, similar to Kettering’s other degree programs, focuses heavily on experiential learning.

The Association for Ambulatory Behavioral Healthcare (AABH) recently recognized the McLaren Flint Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program as a finalist for National Partial Hospital Program of the Year. Mark Sak, Program Manager and Ken Deighton, Director of Behavioral Health Services accepted the award on July 16 at the AABH Annual Conference in Long Beach, CA.

Technology continues to expand and play an integral role in our lives. We use our phones for more than calling a friend – they’re our way of life: social media, texting, playing games and more. Without our phones or tablets we are lost!

When you think of someone having a mole on their face, you may envision a “beauty mark” like Marilyn Monroe’s or Cindy Crawford’s. Other people associate moles as a characteristic of witches or villains – raised and unsightly. In popular culture, heroes and heroines are usually associated with clear, smooth facial skin while villains are portrayed with facial moles, scars or blemishes. Regardless, moles are common and most of us have at least a few.

maureentippen-5Maureen Tippen, Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Nursing, University of Michigan-Flint, holds service learning in high regard. “It just makes a person look at things differently,” she states. “We want our students to be global citizens and we really want that on their resume when they leave UM-Flint.”

Weight loss is a very personal thing. Dr. Frank Tilli, Director of Interventional Cardiology at Genesys Regional Medical Center for the last six years, has struggled with his weight since he was a child. “My weight has been up and down throughout my entire life,” he shares. At the age of 52, he decided to make some major lifestyle changes. “I told myself enough is enough.” He went from 275 pounds to 145 – a 130-pound loss. And it took him a year to get there. At first, he averaged a loss of two to three pounds a week. “I was pretty aggressive, as one to two pounds a week is what is recommended. I wouldn’t expect most people to lose as quickly, but I started with a lot to lose.”

In the minds of patients, dental procedures and pain are often synonymous. Anxiety and apprehension are typically present during dental visits, and especially magnified in pediatric patients. Certain procedures evoke a feeling of dread; for example, the proverbial “root canal” and the removal of wisdom teeth.
