March is just around the corner and it’s time to start thinking green!  The Ancient Order of Hibernians has announced the details of this year’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Flint. The 39th Annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities take place on Tuesday, March 17, from 12:02pm to 6pm. This year, the Grand Marshal is Flint resident Tony Vance, the Chief of the United States Attorney’s branch offices in Flint and Bay City. Also, in attendance will be 2020 Miss Hibernia Bridget Cassidy and her court, Mother of the Year Helen O’Dea of Clio, and Father of the Year Mike Vance of Fenton.

From February 21-23 at the Flint Repertory Theatre “Packrat,” the new puppet play will debut for children and adults. A co-production with Concrete Temple Theatre, Packrat follows one particular rodent named Bud as he travels through the Sagebrush Desert to discover the interconnectedness of us all. This visually stunning play contemplates humanity’s relationship with the natural world. The animal characters in the puppet show include packrat, ground squirrel, jackrabbit, scorpion, lizard, tortoise, burrowing owl and goshawk. The play is written and directed by Renee Philippi, designed by Carlo Adinolfi with original music by Lewis Finn.

With the recent cold snap, it looks like the ice will be ready on Lobdell and Byram Lakes in Linden. On Sunday, February 16, the 4th Annual Linden Ice Fishing Tournament will take place on Lobdell and Byram Lakes from 7am to 5pm. Those wishing to compete or just have a fun day with the family can register online at www.fentonchamber.com until 4pm today. Registration will reopen on Sunday from 7am to 10pm at the Loose Senior Center located at 707 N. Bridge St., Linden. All registered adults and children are entered in the raffle for door prizes and gift baskets. Prices for fishing are $10 for adults and $5 for kids (14 and under).

If you and your spouse or partner are lovers of art and music, this is a great weekend to celebrate. Starting Friday, February 14, the MW Gallery in Downtown Flint will open the “Examining Identity Construction” exhibit during art walk. The new exhibit features portraiture, scenes from everyday life and works that confront racial myths and stereotypes. Explore the dynamics of identity and the visual representation of African Americans. Artists include Robert Arneson, Camille Billops, Sanford Biggers, Mark Steven Greenfield, Ayana Jackson, Whitfield Lovell, Kehinde Wiley, Pat Ward Williams and more. As an added bonus, “Kevin Collins’ African/Jazz Trio” will be performing love songs for Valentine’s Day from 6:30-8:30pm.

Kick off your Valentine’s Day plans early! The Capitol Theater is showing an old-time favorite romantic comedy, When Harry Met Sally, today on the big screen at 7pm.

Two days twice a year, families and friends can enjoy one of Michigan’s premiere outdoor activities, Michigan Fishing, for FREE! The 2020 Free Fishing Weekends are scheduled February 15-16 and June 13-14. All fishing license fees will be waived for two days. A Recreational Passport will NOT be required for entry into state parks and boating access sites during Free Fishing Weekend. Residents and out-of-state visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations will still apply.

Have you ever wanted to take a hike at For-Mar under the magical glow of a full moon? This is your chance to experience what the animals that live at For-Mar Nature Preserve & Abortorium see at night. Join a naturalist on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 8pm for a full moon hike and see firsthand how beautiful and peaceful the park is after dark.  Full moon hikes are offered every month at For-Mar. Cost is $4 per person. You must register by Friday, Feb. 7.
