When I’m in search of something different to serve my family after a busy day, I often reach for this recipe for easy Red Beans and Rice. It is not only delicious; it brings back memories of sultry days spent in New Orleans.

JT’s Country Kitchen, a homey Swartz Creek eatery, was voted the winner of the Family Restaurant and Best Service categories in the 2020 My City Magazine City’s Choice Awards. MCM visited the charming restaurant and met up with co-owners Jamie Perkins (the “J” of JT’s) and Teresa Spence (the “T”) and we were not disappointed! Family IS what it is all about at JT’s and the service can be compared to sitting down at your grandma’s kitchen table and enjoying a hearty, delicious, home-cooked meal.

Today, July 29, is National Chicken Wing Day! This special day is devoted to all things wings and was established in 1977 by Stan Makowski, the then-mayor of Buffalo, NY. The holiday originally celebrated the people of Buffalo’s penchant for consuming ”thousands of pounds of chicken wings” at restaurants every week, according to the New York Times.

My youngest grandson, Elijah, loves macaroni and cheese. If his mother would let him, he would eat it every day for lunch and dinner. A friend gave me an easy recipe for Crock pot Macaroni and Cheese that I serve at family gatherings. It’s delicious and Elijah loves it!

Today will be a busy day outside at the Flint Farmers’ Market (FFM), according to Market Manager Karianne Martus. FFM has designated the outdoor pavilion as a GROWERS ONLY space on Tuesdays from 10am-2pm in an effort to bring more farmers with local and organic produce to the Flint community. “Now in its fourth week, things are starting to pick up with the peak of the Michigan growing season just a month away,” states Martus in a news release.

Genesee District Library is offering a variety of virtual programs during the summer month. Many of the programs that have been enjoyed in the library’s branches will now be offered digitally.

Many folks will be celebrating the Fourth of July with a backyard barbecue. With the temperature soaring into the 90s, why not dish up a cool and refreshing cucumber watermelon and feta salad — a perfect side dish to serve with barbecued chicken or ribs.

Growing up in the state of Maryland, fried green tomatoes were something we enjoyed eating when the tomatoes first started to ripen in our huge vegetable garden. This is my mother’s recipe and they are delicious!

The strawberries at Spicer Orchards in Fenton are almost ready to be picked. There is nothing better than the sweet taste of the red berry on a hot summer day. One of my favorite things to do with fresh-picked strawberries is to make a cool, delicious strawberry pie. The recipe I use is from pillsbury.com. Piled high with delicious, juicy strawberries and topped with sweetened whipped cream, this fruity dessert is a proven crowd-pleaser. AND, it’s super easy to make! You only need seven ingredients for this recipe to come together.
