It’s a Flint Thanksgiving Day tradition! Put on your running shoes and join in on the fun at the 63nd Annual Flint Turkey Trot at Mott Park on Thursday, November 28. The race is the oldest, consecutively run footrace in Michigan and attracts over 500 participants every year. The event features a 1-Mile and 2-Mile race for youngsters and a 3-Mile main event. Proceeds go to support the YMCA Summer Camp Program as well as Whaley Children’s Center. The event is hosted by Bauman’s Running/ Walking Shop. Runners/trotters receive medals for finishing the race, as well as pies to age group winners to enjoy with their holiday meals!
Taking place on Saturday, February 1 at the Genesys Conference and Banquet Center, the Black History Month Brunch presented by the Genesee District Library, gathers the community together to recognize the contributions of local African Americans to community and world history. This premier event is a much-celebrated affair with proceeds benefiting the Genesee District Library’s Summer Reading Challenge.

On Wednesday, October 30, the MotorCities National Heritage Area Partnership honored Flint’s Back to the Bricks with its award for Heritage Tourism, part of the 6th annual Awards of Excellence during Michigan Auto Heritage Day ceremonies at the Capitol Rotunda in Lansing.
Tomorrow, November 5 important elections are taking place in select cities in Genesee County. In Flint, the mayoral election will take place pitting incumbent Mayor Karen Weaver against State Representative Sheldon Neeley. Also, in Flint, voters will decide on two proposals concerning the Flint Public Library. The library is proposing a 12-year, $12.6 million bond and the renewal of a $2 million operating millage. The operating millage is equal to nearly half of the money used to operate the library while the bond will be put towards the new vision and renovation of the library.
One of the longest-serving leaders of a major philanthropy in the United States, William S. White passed away peacefully on October 9 at age 82. He held the position of CEO of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation from 1979-2018 and continued to serve as chairman of the Foundation’s board of trustees until his passing on October 9, 2019.
In 1919, Flint was growing. General Motors was beginning to roll and workers were flooding into the city looking to get into the auto industry. In no time at all, the city became quite crowded. In order to accommodate all of its new employees, GM purchased land set aside by the defunct Civic Building Association and began construction of one of Flint’s first neighborhoods – Civic Park.
Are you ready for an extra hour of sleep? It’s time to fall back! Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday, November 3 at 2am and much of the country will turn their clocks back one hour. And while we will enjoy longer sleep time there are some consequences that occur with the end of Daylight Saving Time. The change shifts daylight back into the morning hours for 9-to-5 office workers, so say goodbye to leaving work while it’s still light out.
From Jim Crow to CEO! A new book will debut on Wednesday, October 30 at the Mott Culinary Institute featuring the life of our very own Willie Artis, CEO of Genesee Packaging. Mr. Artis found Genesee Packaging in 1979 to provide packaging to the automotive industry and other product suppliers. The business employed nearly a thousand people and grew to become one of the most successful in Flint’s history.
