Hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint and Genesee County, this cherished community tradition honors Dr. King’s legacy by celebrating mentorship, volunteerism and service.
The morning began with a warm welcome and invocation from James Washington, Chairman of the BBBS Board of Directors, followed by a soulful musical selection by Big Sister Carrie Edwards. Genesee County Commissioner and Berston Field House Executive Director James Avery served as the Master of Ceremony, guiding the program with energy and enthusiasm.
The keynote address was delivered by Mama Sōl, a Flint native and celebrated hip-hop artist, spoken word performer and community advocate. Known for her inspirational work and activism, Mama Sōl has recently worked alongside Dr. Mona Hanna to improve the health of Flint mothers and infants through the Rx Kids program. Her words inspired attendees to carry forward Dr. King’s vision of equity and service.
A stirring “Call to Action” was presented by Big Brother Travis Rodgers, urging the community to deepen their commitment to mentoring and youth empowerment. The event concluded with heartfelt closing remarks from Lisa Humphrey, President/CEO of BBBS of Flint and Genesee County.
What began as a tribute to Dr. King’s vision has grown into a cornerstone event for National Mentoring Month, attracting over 100 supporters annually. This year’s breakfast aligned with key mentoring milestones such as “I’m a Mentor Day” and “Thank Your Mentor Day,” underscoring the transformative power of positive relationships in shaping the future.
Attendees, including “Bigs” and “Littles” from the program, community leaders, civic organizations and volunteers came together to celebrate the successes of mentoring initiatives and reaffirm their shared commitment to empowering local youth.
