This is Tootsie Roll! She is a 1½- year-old Abyssinian Guinea pig. She is very sweet. She likes to be handled and will let out a squeal if she hears a bag crinkle. She loves snacks.
She has been at the Humane Society of Genesee County since April. Her adoption fee is $40.
An Abyssinian guinea pig can make a wonderful pet. Guinea pigs typically live 5–8 years, with some reaching 9 or more with excellent care.
Here are the most important things to know before adopting one.
First, guinea pigs should not live alone
Guinea pigs are highly social animals and generally do much better with another compatible guinea pig. If the one you’re adopting currently has a cage mate, ask whether they should be adopted together. Introducing unfamiliar adults later can sometimes take patience, especially males.
Find out why it’s being rehomed.
Cage size matters.
Diet is critical
A healthy guinea pig’s diet should consist of:
- ► Unlimited timothy hay (available 24/7)
- ► About 1 cup of fresh vegetables daily, especially leafy greens
- ► A quality guinea pig pellet containing stabilized vitamin C
- ► Fresh water at all times
Avoid iceberg lettuce, onions, garlic, potatoes, chocolate, and sugary treats. They need vitamin C every day.
Grooming
Abyssinians have distinctive swirls (rosettes) in their fur.
They generally need:
- ► Weekly brushing
- ►Occasional nail trimming (every 4–6 weeks)
- ►Regular checks for mats, skin problems, and parasites
Veterinary care
Not every veterinarian treats guinea pigs, so locate an experienced exotic animal veterinarian before an emergency happens.
Costs to expect
Expect to spend $30–$75 per month on routine care, plus occasional veterinary expenses.
