Presiding over the program was Venetia Petteway, Director of STEM Diversity Initiative and Corporate & Community Engagement at Kettering University. The evening opened with a flag ceremony led by the Urban Boy Scouts, under the direction of Cory Moore, and a heartfelt welcome from UM-Flint Chancellor, Dr. Laurence Alexander. These scholarships honor students who embody Dr. King’s ideals of humanitarianism, leadership and social justice.

Steven Low, Executive Director of the Flint Jewish Federation, recognized the winners of the MLK Essay Contest: Jarena Lee (1st place), Sophia Halloun (2nd place) and Autumn Medrano and Jasmine Reeves (3rd place).

Keynote speaker Dr. Clarence Nixon, Jr., PhD, CEO & Founder of t.Lab and multiple leadership award-winner, inspired all with his message.
