Following an elegant champagne reception and silent auction, attendees enjoyed a buffet dinner and sparkling conversation while bidding on live auction items including a Mackinaw City getaway and breakfast with giraffes at the Detroit Zoo. Each year’s reverse auction donations are earmarked for a specific need at the shelter. This year, they will help establish an emergency medical fund in honor of retired veterinarian Dr. John Snell who provided care for HSGC animals at his Flint clinic, many times free of charge, for over 50 years.

Just over 200 individuals gathered for this evening of food and fun that included a bourbon tasting and silent auction. The spotlight was on 15 one-of-a-kind chairs created by local artists and volunteers that were auctioned, both live and live-online. The event raised nearly $81,000 to support many Catholic Charities programs that make a significant difference in the lives of community members in need. The newly-renovated St. Michael’s Conference Center is available for bookings; call 810.232.9950 X111.

For many of the people of Greater Flint, homelessness has been a constant threat since the 1980s and the problem has only grown, with record increases in rental rates and a lack of affordable traditional housing. Today, it is estimated that nearly 600,000 people are experiencing homelessness throughout the country and, of those experiencing it, nearly 6% are United States Military veterans. In Greater Flint, the percentage of homeless vets is much higher. “It is estimated that between 15-40% of the local homeless individuals are veterans,” states Katie Baxter, CEO of Catholic Charities of Shiawassee and Genesee Counties. “In this group, there is clearly a need. After everything they have done for us, it just doesn’t seem right.”

I sure hope everyone is enjoying this Michigan summer as much as I am. As I write this column, we’re just past the Fourth of July celebrations and appreciating the fact that this beautiful country is now 250 years old. My husband and I were fortunate to be invited to two get-togethers on Lake Fenton on July 4. One party was filled with young families and children enjoying the lake, while the other reunited old friends. Both were equally wonderful. We ended the evening on our patio, taking in the fireworks all around us. We’re especially grateful that our dog doesn’t pay attention to the loud booms.

Last month My City celebrated its 13th year as your local magazine, focused on covering all of the creative, artistic, successful, positive individuals and events of the greater Flint area. This month, I am celebrating one year with My City. The previous publisher and editor, Vince Lorraine and Sherron Barden, created a fantastic local magazine that was filled from cover to cover with interesting stories, and reputable businesses ready to take care of all of your needs. After leaving the newspaper business after more than 20 years, I stepped into this role with the new publisher, Laura Constable, knowing that we didn’t want to mess with a good thing. We, however, added a few new features that allowed us to showcase even more local people.
