With Veterans Day right around the corner and Thanksgiving later this month, November is the perfect time to look inward and give thanks for the many blessings in our lives.
Those blessings can be as simple as witnessing a beautiful sunrise while frost covers the ground or as significant as welcoming a new baby into the family. I have much to be thankful for, starting with my husband, Jeff, our children and grandchildren, extended family, friends, co-workers and so many others.
During our daily early-morning, three-mile walk with our dog, I often silently give thanks for the things we sometimes take for granted: a loving family, a roof over our heads, food in our kitchen, clothes in our closets and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to walk three miles with ease.
November is also the perfect time to remember and honor our military veterans for their selfless bravery, service and sacrifices for this great country.
This November issue includes our My City Cares section, featuring nonprofits and organizations that do so much for our communities. Be sure to read about what these hardworking men and women do every day, as well as the companies and individuals who support their causes.

Local history buffs will love Gary Fisher’s story on William “Billy” Crapo Durant, the Flint businessman who played a pivotal role in the creation of General Motors. I learned so much from Gary’s article, and I’m sure you will, too. I also recently learned that Gary has a new book about Billy Durant, and I can’t wait to read it.
Mark Rummel took a month off from his regular column to tell us about a unique annual event at his church, the fourth annual Faith, Hope and Tattoos. Be sure to check it out.
Hockey enthusiasts will welcome the Flint Firebirds back to their schedules. The team has started its new season, and My City writer Mark Spezia has all the details.
If you’ve ever thought about taking up knitting or crocheting, be sure to read My City writer Keegan Deloney’s story on Beyond the Rainforest, a welcoming shop, now in Durand.
On behalf of everyone at My City Magazine, we thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice. We also wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving, whether you’re enjoying a quiet dinner with family or a loud get-together while cheering on our Detroit Lions.
As always, thank you for reading My City Magazine and allowing us to share the people, stories and events that make our communities so special.
