The Famous Vernor’s Mural
In 1932, General Signs workers John Gonsowski and Keith Martin painted a three-story mural to advertise Vernor’s Ginger Ale on the building across from the
Meet this adorable, bonded pair of besties – about 7½ years young and ready to bring some serious chill vibes to your home. These two are inseparable and must be adopted together (they wouldn’t have it any other way).
Well, in a couple weeks, my family will celebrate another exciting milestone. My oldest grandson, Brennan, is graduating from Michigan Technological University (MTU) in Houghton! Not only is he graduating, he received an amazing job offer in Rochester, MN and will be moving there to start his new life. Time just flies too fast, doesn’t it? It seems like it was only yesterday that he graduated from high school.
In the U.S., New Jersey is the only state where motorists are prohibited by law from pumping their own gasoline. I need that kind of joy in my life!
As of this writing, President Trump has implemented record high tariffs across numerous countries. The stock market responded by dropping by 10% within two days. This has pushed the market 15% below its peak in February 2025, resulting in the loss of trillions in shareholder value.
I tend to associate “beach people” with sand. They love the feeling of it between their toes, the wildness (or calm, depending on the day) of the sea or ocean waves. They’re drawn to that return-to-nature element of the beach trip. There’s a childlike wonder to it all; a nostalgia for our younger selves, maybe even for another time entirely, when people lived by the water, on the water, because of the water – that ancient, instinctive pull of the sea and waterways that shaped civilization as we know it.
I am one of those blessed people who made it to midlife with a living grandparent. I was 46 years old when my maternal grandmother, Barb, passed away in July 2014. There has been a gaping hole in my life ever since. You see, Barb was more than my Gramma, she was the best friend I ever had. I was named after her – my real first name is Barbara. My mom chose to call me Leslie, but I have always been a Barb in my heart.

There is no doubt in my mind that this has been a long, cold winter. We’ve all felt it. We’ve all complained. I like to stay active throughout the year, and I love being outside soaking up the fresh air and vitamin D that Michigan offers. For the past few years, my husband and I have taken early morning walks in our neighborhood with our dog. Using my fitness app, we measured that walking the entire neighborhood equals 3.1 miles. That’s perfect when the weather is great—but not so much when the roads are snow-covered and the cold wind stings your face.
I know it really doesn’t mean much in the long run, but I’m glad February is a short calendar month. It follows January, which can feel dreadfully long and cold with its 31 days here in Mid-Michigan. Now that our kids are grown and we’re no longer following our travel hockey-playing sons to winter tournaments across the Midwest and Canada, my husband and I have taken the opportunity to travel south during the coldest weeks of the year when we can. I mentioned in my January column that we started the year with a Caribbean cruise alongside some of our closest friends. We even squeezed in a few nights in our favorite beach town, New Smyrna Beach, Florida. It was the perfect getaway, and we all returned home with more cherished memories.
