Editor’s Letter

I sure hope everyone is enjoying this Michigan summer as much as I am. As I write this column, we’re just past the Fourth of July celebrations and appreciating the fact that this beautiful country is now 250 years old. My husband and I were fortunate to be invited to two get-togethers on Lake Fenton on July 4. One party was filled with young families and children enjoying the lake, while the other reunited old friends. Both were equally wonderful. We ended the evening on our patio, taking in the fireworks all around us. We’re especially grateful that our dog doesn’t pay attention to the loud booms.

As you’ll notice in our Can’t Miss List on page 50, August is jam-packed with fun events for the whole family. From free concerts in parks across the county to Back to the Bricks events and Tune Up Parties, there are plenty of activities to enjoy. You’ll also want to check out the 14th Annual Flint Drop Fest, Flint ArtWalk, the 49th Annual HAP Crim Festival of Races, The Ally Challenge at Warwick Hills, and Genesee County Day at Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad. There’s no room for boredom in August.

Be sure to check out My City’s Children and Teens’ Health section, including an excellent nutrition article by Dr. Shan Jackson. Another article encourages parents to limit their children’s screen time. It probably wouldn’t hurt parents to cut back on their own screen time, either. If you haven’t seen Toy Story 5 yet, it touches on this topic while providing plenty of entertainment for the kiddos.

My City writer Keegan Deloney highlights the many milestones school districts across Genesee County are celebrating in our Education section. It’s a great read.

Gary Fisher, a My City writer and president of the Genesee County Historical Society, shares the highlights of the GCHS Heritage Day Dinner. You won’t want to miss his story or the accompanying photos.

My City writer Mark Spezia takes an in-depth look at Addyson Stiverson, a student athlete with an incredibly bright future. Mark does a wonderful job showcasing her accomplishments.

Our August issue also includes My City’s Student Standout, Love Story, and columns from our talented regular contributors. I always look forward to what our writers have to say.

August also brings Michigan’s Primary Election on Aug. 4. Be sure to make your voice heard by getting out to vote. The primary determines which candidates advance to the general election in November and includes races for Governor, U.S. Senator, State Senator, Representatives in Congress, delegates to the county convention, District Court judges, and more. Registered voters will also decide several local proposals.

Ask most people, and they can remember a bully from their childhood. Bullying is unfortunately part of the landscape in many school settings. We have come a long way toward building awareness and working on prevention. October, for example, is National Bullying Prevention Month. But the bullies are still out there. A million years ago,
