Editor’s Letter

Last month My City celebrated its 13th year as your local magazine, focused on covering all of the creative, artistic, successful, positive individuals and events of the greater Flint area. This month, I am celebrating one year with My City. The previous publisher and editor, Vince Lorraine and Sherron Barden, created a fantastic local magazine that was filled from cover to cover with interesting stories, and reputable businesses ready to take care of all of your needs. After leaving the newspaper business after more than 20 years, I stepped into this role with the new publisher, Laura Constable, knowing that we didn’t want to mess with a good thing. We, however, added a few new features that allowed us to showcase even more local people.

Everyone at My City appreciates your continued support through subscriptions and advertising. I love it when someone tells me that they saw (and read) one of our magazines at the dentist or doctor’s office. I also appreciate our entire team of marketing experts, graphics, writers and more. It’s been a bit of a learning curve for me, but after a year, I think I’ve got things down. This magazine wouldn’t be as good as it is without the help of our knowledgeable team.

In this July issue, you will want to take note of our City’s Choice Awards winners. Several pages are dedicated to the individuals and businesses that were voted on by their clients and customers. Congratulations to all of the winners.

The July issue also has special pages dedicated to our older folks in our Longevity section. Our health experts help us age gracefully.

After reading stories from our writers for this July issue, I am feeling even more love for this country as we celebrate its 250th birthday on July 4. My City writer Gary Fisher’s story on Kearsley Park in 1976 gave a perfect view of the July 4th red, white and blue celebration through the eyes of an 11-year-old boy growing up in Flint.
My City writer Keegan Deloney wrote an inspiring story on Audrey Tremaine of Fenton who is exploring this beautiful country on her own, in her van. It takes a lot of courage and discipline to accomplish an adventure like that.

My City writer Mark Spezia also wrote an inspiring story on Roy Jackson Jr., and his dedication and contributions to young basketball players from the Flint area. Be sure to check out that story, as well as the photos by local photographer Rayford Gray.

Our columnists never disappoint. Their experiences and passions result in beautiful writings for all of us to appreciate.

Lastly, I’m celebrating another birthday this month. Maybe that’s why the Longevity section stories were so appreciated. I want to thank everyone for the kind birthday wishes.
Happy 250th anniversary to the United States of America, the greatest country in the world.
