The stunning view overwhelmed Donald McMonagle, leaving him gazing in amazement.

As 2009 ended, America’s populace looked forward to returning to a more calm and prosperous time. That, frustratingly, was not to be. Climate and the environment were the major focus when in 2010, Deepwater Horizon, an offshore drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico, exploded causing multiple deaths and the biggest oil spill in U.S. waters. Companies BP and Transocean received astronomical fines for their involvement. In 2011, the U.S. ended the life of Osama Bin Laden, the terrorist mastermind behind the September 11 attacks. The next year, Hurricane Sandy made landfall in New Jersey and New York causing $6.5 billion in damage. Then, in 2012, President Barack Obama won a second term after besting challenger, Mit Romney.

When Katrina Berger was 17 years old and fresh out of high school, she had no idea what she wanted to do next in life. Raised by a single mother who worked two and even three jobs to support her three daughters, Katrina’s life hadn’t always been easy. “I had received a few small scholarships, but I didn’t want school debt and I didn’t know what I wanted to do for a career,” she remembers. So, she walked into a recruiting office in Port Huron and enlisted in the U.S. Navy – a decision she has never regretted.

We live in the best state, don’t we? We have four legitimate seasons, we are surrounded by gorgeous lakes, our outdoors is spectacular and our craftmanship knows no bounds. If you want to impress your friends and family this holiday season, give them a little piece of Michigan. Here are some unique, Mitten-made items to consider.

As a kid in high school, Dallas Martin was a serious music fan, downloading music by Lil Wayne and Jay-Z on Napster. He studied top hip-hop moguls and obsessively searched the internet for new music, then predicted which songs would be hits. Driven to turn his passion into a career, he left Flint to begin his journey in Atlanta, GA where he pursued music industry connections. There, he went to college, made progress and faced setbacks – but was focused on his dream and has made it a reality.

For 38 years, Love INC has provided help to the needy in Genesee County. According to Judd Judkins, Executive Director, the nonprofit, nationally-based church-networking organization was founded in Holland, MI by Virgil Gaulker, whose plan was simple and effective: match churches with the needy. His plan included creating a central clearing office to screen requests, eliminate duplicated services between community agencies and churches, and facilitate collaboration and shared resources among those in the Love, INC network. And while many people would think “INC” stands for “incorporated,” it doesn’t; it stands for “In the Name of Christ,” Judkins states.

In 1919, Flint was growing. General Motors was beginning to roll and workers were flooding into the city looking to get into the auto industry. In no time at all, the city became quite crowded. In order to accommodate all of its new employees, GM purchased land set aside by the defunct Civic Building Association and began construction of one of Flint’s first neighborhoods – Civic Park.

At 6pm this Friday at the Flint Golf Club, the Voices for Children Denim & Diamonds event will begin. This year the event will be produced by Pure Bliss Salon & Spa and will support the Voices for Children Advocacy Center’s mission to help prevent child abuse and neglect in Genesee County. The theme for this year is “Our Kids Rock!” Music will be provided by the all kids rock band “3rd Degree Burns” who opened for Dierks Bentley at this year’s Ally Challenge at Warwick Hills. The night will also feature a silent auction, talented youth performances, a karate expo, youth dancers, food & drinks and more.

Are you ready for an extra hour of sleep? It’s time to fall back! Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday, November 3 at 2am and much of the country will turn their clocks back one hour. And while we will enjoy longer sleep time there are some consequences that occur with the end of Daylight Saving Time. The change shifts daylight back into the morning hours for 9-to-5 office workers, so say goodbye to leaving work while it’s still light out.
