On Wednesday, October 30, the MotorCities National Heritage Area Partnership honored Flint’s Back to the Bricks with its award for Heritage Tourism, part of the 6th annual Awards of Excellence during Michigan Auto Heritage Day ceremonies at the Capitol Rotunda in Lansing.
Tomorrow, November 5 important elections are taking place in select cities in Genesee County. In Flint, the mayoral election will take place pitting incumbent Mayor Karen Weaver against State Representative Sheldon Neeley. Also, in Flint, voters will decide on two proposals concerning the Flint Public Library. The library is proposing a 12-year, $12.6 million bond and the renewal of a $2 million operating millage. The operating millage is equal to nearly half of the money used to operate the library while the bond will be put towards the new vision and renovation of the library.
One of the longest-serving leaders of a major philanthropy in the United States, William S. White passed away peacefully on October 9 at age 82. He held the position of CEO of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation from 1979-2018 and continued to serve as chairman of the Foundation’s board of trustees until his passing on October 9, 2019.
In 1919, Flint was growing. General Motors was beginning to roll and workers were flooding into the city looking to get into the auto industry. In no time at all, the city became quite crowded. In order to accommodate all of its new employees, GM purchased land set aside by the defunct Civic Building Association and began construction of one of Flint’s first neighborhoods – Civic Park.

From Jim Crow to CEO! A new book will debut on Wednesday, October 30 at the Mott Culinary Institute featuring the life of our very own Willie Artis, CEO of Genesee Packaging. Mr. Artis found Genesee Packaging in 1979 to provide packaging to the automotive industry and other product suppliers. The business employed nearly a thousand people and grew to become one of the most successful in Flint’s history.
On Thursday, November 7, from 11:30-1 p.m. at the Genesys Banquet and Conference Center, the YWCA of Greater Flint will hold its major-fundraising event. The luncheon will feature keynote speaker Ilyasah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X. Shabazz is a staunch advocate for youth and woman empowerment and promotes higher education for at-risk youth.

Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October. This is a day for you to recognize that sweet and special someone. It doesn’t matter who that person is, they just have to be “sweet” in order to get a little recognition. The day is often celebrated with gifts of flowers, candy and cards. Many restaurants in the area offer Sweetest Day specials.
On the campus of Mott Community College this upcoming Monday (October 14), the 27th Annual Peace & Dignity Ceremony will take place. The ceremony is designed to promote cultural and racial harmony. Starting at 11am, the program will begin at the Peace and Dignity Tree on the lawn of the Mott Memorial Building, facing Court Street. It will be held outdoors (rain or shine) and is free for the public to attend.
