Thrill & Honor Experience the Scream N’ Rebels War Birds

For more than three decades, the Scream N’ Rebels War Birds have offered audiences across Michigan and beyond a breathtaking tribute to the heroes of the past – a blend of vintage aviation, patriotic spectacle and heartfelt honor.

Founded in 1992 at Flint Bishop International Airport by U.S. Air Force combat pilot Jim Greason and longtime squadron member Bob Pingston, the group has grown into a beloved symbol of military aviation history and American pride. Today, under the expert leadership of Chief Pilot Bruce Koch, the squadron continues its mission: honoring the legacy of those who served through powerful public performances and educational displays.

The Scream N’ Rebels’ impressive fleet includes the rare Vultee BT-13 SNV-1 – one of only two still flying in the U.S. – and an AT-6 Texan currently housed at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum in Detroit.

Bruce Koch takes off as lead ship of four at Dupont Lapeer Airport for the 2020 Operation Gratitude Hometown Hero’s flyover for Genesee County healthcare workers.

Lisa Colletti and Tracy Tillman fly in formation to a patriotic flyover event.

That particular aircraft was once flown by the famed “Red Tails,” the trailblazing African American pilots who defied prejudice and enemy fire during World War II.

National Aviation Day is August 19

In 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt issued a proclamation that designated the anniversary of Orville Wright’s birthday to be National Aviation Day. Brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright are credited with inventing and building the world’s first successful airplane and making the first controlled powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight on December 17, 1903.

Also featured in the squadron are the North American Aviation AT-6 Texan and the T-34 Mentor, aircraft that played pivotal roles in training generations of military pilots. Each appearance by the War Birds brings history to life, whether through thrilling flyovers at community events or choreographed participation in regional airshows.

Among their most powerful displays is the signature “missing man” formation – a moving aerial salute performed in memory of fallen servicemen and women. Accompanied by the haunting strains of John Williams’ “Hymn to the Fallen,” the formation features a symbolic aircraft veering away from the group, trailing smoke into the sky – a solemn tribute to lives lost in service. At some venues, the group also performs to “We Remember” by Dwayne O’Brien, a powerful visual and musical tribute that, when paired with a large screen, becomes a truly unforgettable experience.

The current flight team includes Bruce Koch, Dave Folk, Lisa Colletti, Tracy Tillman, Brian Smith and Frank Powers. Together, they bring passion, precision and reverence to each performance.

Whether soaring above a summer festival or honoring veterans at a memorial service, the Scream N’ Rebels War Birds deliver more than a show – they offer a soaring salute to courage, sacrifice and the enduring spirit of American aviation.
