Dr. Samuel R. Dismond, Jr. January 14, 1932 – February 5, 2021

Kind, gentle, compassionate, humble. These words have been used to describe beloved community leader, Dr. Samuel Dismond, who passed away in February at the age of 89.

Dr. Dismond’s 50-year career in Family Medicine included work at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital of Flint and at Hurley Medical Center, where he was the first African American Chief of Staff from 1995 to 2000. The nature of his practice and his extended tenure granted him the opportunity to guide many people in Genesee County through the various stages of their lives with Janice, his wife of 62 years, working at his side. As an obstetrician, he delivered over 1,000 babies in our community and through his work in geriatrics, his hands were the last to care for many of our elderly citizens. Dr. Dismond thoroughly knew Flint as a people.

Esteemed and accomplished, his work was celebrated with many local and national awards, including the Michigan State Medical Society Presidential Citation in 2011. He was also a longtime and dedicated patron of the Flint Institute of Music, where he served as a tenured Board of Trustees member until the day of his passing.

A giant in the healthcare and Flint communities, the father of seven led an exemplary life of service. Many who knew Dr. Dismond will most remember his sincere, caring nature and warm smile.
