Experience the Beautiful Diversity of the Area this Saturday

Ever since Mr. Whiting and Billy Durant brought Buick to the city in the early 1900s, Flint has been teeming with diversity. People flooded the city from all around the world looking for a better life. One that Flint provided. Diversity is still on the rise in Flint and beyond. Our county holds a wonderful mix if culture, race and individuality, and it should be celebrated.

We are only as strong as our bond as citizens of Greater Flint and no amount of divisiveness should tear us apart and keep us from working towards a great future. This Saturday, January 8, the annual Unity in Diversity Celebration will be held at the Insight Institute of Neurosurgery & Neuroscience (4800 S. Saginaw St.) from 7-9pm. The event is free to the public.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Dreams for the Decade” driven by the collective response of the Flint Community in contrast with today’s political climate. Greater Flint dreams of a better decade for all. This year’s event will be hosted by news anchor Dawn Jones and will feature a bevy of musical acts including a choir, violinist, flamenco guitar, spoken word, dance and storytelling performed by artists of all nationalities, ethnicities, religions and gender identities. The celebration is presented by Flint Jewish Federation, Court Street United Methodist Church, Mott Community College, Arab American Heritage Council and International Center of Greater Flint.

Please join the celebration to experience the richness of our diversity and to develop bonds of understanding, respect and friendship. Greater Flint is nothing without the bonds of our community. Keep them strong.

Ask most people, and they can remember a bully from their childhood. Bullying is unfortunately part of the landscape in many school settings.
