From the Publisher “Wellness Spring 2016”

Dear Readers,

“What is more important than your heath?” I’m quite sure this is a question we only ask ourselves when we, or someone we love is challenged by an unexpected illness or health crisis. Webster’s defines health as “the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit; especially: freedom from physical disease or pain.” The value of good health is the reason why I decided to publish My City Wellness.

The lovely smiles on the cover belong to sisters Mallory Turchi and Stephanie Wilcox. In October of 2015, Mallory was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Read the story of how she has met this health challenge and found a lifesaving bone marrow “match” in her sister. Mal is a family friend – we wish her the best.

Also in this issue are my good friends, John and Jennifer Wentworth, who share their story of the challenges they face with six-year-old son, Rocco, who has life-threatening food allergies. Jennifer states, “Until you deal with it, you just don’t understand it.” Even if you don’t have a family member with serious food allergies, you can learn from the Wentworths’ story.

Our “Health Care Highlight” features Katie Watts, RN, who has spent 13 years caring for patients in Hurley Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). With the help of Hurley’s state-of-the-art equipment and her talented colleagues, she has made a difference in the lives of many families who put the health of their tiny babies in her hands.

May is National Bike Month, and I’m ready! I splurged and bought a road-racing bike, and I look forward to enjoying both recreational and competitive bicycling this spring. As an elected official in Fenton Township, I was very happy to see the LAFF Pathway Coalition present their plans to construct non-motorized trails connecting Linden, Argentine, Fenton and Lake Fenton.

Rounding out our content are the articles written by a group of health care experts – 14 in all. From Autism Awareness to Yoga and everything in between, there’s great variety in this issue. It’s what you have come to expect from My City Magazine.

Thanks for reading!

Ask most people, and they can remember a bully from their childhood. Bullying is unfortunately part of the landscape in many school settings. Everyone has roots. Traditions, communities and families connect us to time, place and one another. They stabilize us and offer comfort. Autumn reminds us of this every year through sweet treats, warm drinks and looking inward toward one another as the world seems to slow down. Almar Orchards is much the same. From its organic
