“From the Publisher” – May 2015

Dear Readers,

With this issue, we wrap up Volume 2 of My City. I can promise you that we have much more in store for our loyal readers and will continue to successfully “up our game.”

Any success depends on many factors. I’m privileged to witness firsthand the role and impact of philanthropy on our community. The Cultural Center that we enjoy – Flint Institute of Music, Flint Institute of Arts, etc. – exists through the generosity of foundations and financial support from private individuals. Many believe that such institutions are funded by our tax dollars; I can assure you that is not the case. These community treasures succeed because of private groups and citizens. For a closer look, read “Foundations Build Brighter Communities”.

Also on the subject of success, check out the “My Success” piece on Genesee County Undersheriff, Chris Swanson, a longtime friend who embodies positivity and dedication. He has a very demanding job and also finds the energy to help others reach their potential. Chris has challenged me to compete in an IRONMAN, which is definitely a personal goal of mine. He was up for a pretty creative photo shoot – one of my favorites so far. When I grow up, I want to be like Chris. (Luv ya, man.)

I feel a “success” theme developing. As a local businessman, I have deep respect for a family business that stands the test of time. Our “My Eats” feature highlights Tia Helita’s, a go-to place for great Mexican food for 45 years. I know the photos will make you hungry!

“Success” is a word we’ll use when speaking about U of M-Flint’s recently inaugurated Chancellor, Dr. Susan Borrego. I’m so happy to have joined the community in celebrating the beginning of her career here. Her vision for U of M’s role in Flint is exactly what we need. I share her goal of fostering a university culture that will shape the city’s future.

Succeeding on another level is our cover girl: up-and-coming, multi-talented singer/dancer, Alexandria Bradley (aka Brinae Ali). The Flint native’s debut album is nominated for an Independent Music Award in the “Urban EP” category (Congrats and Good Luck, Brinae!). I have the pleasure of working with her father, Bruce Bradley, on the FIM’s Board of Directors, and he’s immensely proud of her.

We’re proud that community leaders are drawn to our magazine – its energy and diversity of content. People want to be part of it. Dr. Cyrus Farrehi has penned our first “My Opinion” column, and I invite others to share opinions with our readership and the community.

I hope you enjoy our first “My Destination” feature – the home of my alma mater, Ann Arbor. Since I was a student at U of M, the city has changed so much, yet so little … that’s what makes it great!

I feel like I say this every month, but so much goes on in Greater Flint, we barely have space to contain it all. Our exciting, 12-page “My Haps” section.

It’s all about the people and places that make Greater Flint great! Our “City’s Choice” Awards campaign invites you to choose your favorites in nearly 200 categories. I encourage you to vote right now at mycitymag.com/awards.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for summer in My City!

Thanks for reading,

Ask most people, and they can remember a bully from their childhood. Bullying is unfortunately part of the landscape in many school settings. Everyone has roots. Traditions, communities and families connect us to time, place and one another. They stabilize us and offer comfort. Autumn reminds us of this every year through sweet treats, warm drinks and looking inward toward one another as the world seems to slow down. Almar Orchards is much the same. From its organic
