Jason Caya, Vice President of the Hurley Board of Managers, recently graduated from the year-long Excellence in Governance Fellowship through The Michigan Hospital Association (MHA). He walks in the footsteps of fellow board members Chris Flores, Charlotte Edwards, Carl Bekofske, Phil Shaltz and Frances Gilcreast.

Through the Excellence in Governance Fellowship, board members are educated on the importance of the hospital’s financial health and how this allows for the long-term viability of the hospital as a community asset and a community resource for managing a population’s health.

Hurley Board of Managers Chair, Chris Flores, says, “It is one of the only board certifications to be a hospital governing board member. It impacts our community by educating the lay individuals on how to govern the complex environment of healthcare administration.”

The Fellowship informs board members about hospital challenges and trends and teaches them how to be strategic leaders. It also teaches the interdependence of physician, executive and board leadership to improve health and patient experience, and develops capacity to lead and drive change at a pace that keeps the organization relevant.
