Where did summer go?
We always highlight a few end-of-summer “Haps” in our September issue – but it’s just another sign that our communities will soon be gathering for events of the indoor kind.
This month, we shine a light on First Responders, some of the heroes among us who are there when we need them, risking their own safety to ensure ours. We share some good news for the City of Flint as they now have a dedicated ambulance service which will be provided by well-trained Flint Fire Department personnel. There’s much more in this special section.
First Responders are involved with our communities in many ways; beyond protecting residents, they provide safety education and many other resources. Last month, National Night Out invited people all across the U.S. to attend events that bring law enforcement and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Two local police departments – Flint Township and Grand Blanc Township – went above and beyond to offer their communities some summertime family fun.
For many, life on the front lines is a decades-long journey; Grand Blanc Township recently wished a “Happy Retirement” to Resource Officer Dan Wolschleger after 27 years of dedication to his community.
More from Grand Blanc Township: again this year, our spotlight found a four-legged First Responder. New to the PD is K9 Officer Ace, on the job full-time at Grand Blanc High School – what a good boy!
Also in our special section is a feature about the City of Flint Police Activities League (PAL). You might not know that this program follows the national PAL model, offering a variety of athletic and educational opportunities that help create positive relationships between kids and law enforcement officers; so important in our communities today.
There are many exceptional opportunities for young people in Greater Flint; we highlight the Flint Youth Film Festival, which will celebrate its tenth anniversary next year. Fantastic! Also in the “Arts” category, the Flint Public Art Project has created a book featuring the stunning murals that were painted throughout Greater Flint. It is expected to be available soon (check someone off your holiday gift list, perhaps?)
I think you’ll find our “Health” feature interesting; retired ophthalmologist Dr. Jeffrey Rohr has found a new pursuit, still passionate about helping people live healthier lives. I bet you’ve never heard of exosomes … read about them in this issue.
There’s much more in this issue, including food, music, and our variety of contributed columns. As the leaves get ready to fall and we start breaking out the sweaters, spend some time with My City.
Thanks for reading.
