I remember the very first year I was old enough to vote. My father asked me who I was going to vote for the presidential election. When I told him who I was voting for, he literally cringed. He didn’t try to discourage me from voting for my choice – what he did do was ask me to do my homework and truly look at the candidate to see if they stood for the values I believed in. I never forgot his advice.
I can’t lie … I’ve never been much of a “mustache girl.” When I was a kid, I had a Ken doll. “Mod-haired Ken” they called him. He came with removable, reconfigurable facial hair. He became an increasingly bad character, the more facial hair I applied to him. Sporting a full beard and ‘stache, he was straight up Evil Ken. Kind of ironic that I have been with a bearded man for over a decade. The heart wants what it wants.
When you sit down for Thanksgiving dinner this month, one thing to give thanks for is how unbelievably inexpensive everyday goods are today. A 20lb turkey today costs about $20, according to the USDA, and a gallon of milk costs $3.14. People paid $0.49/lb for turkey and $1.00/gallon for milk in 1950. Adjusted for inflation, people in 1950 were paying the equivalent of $98 for a 20lb turkey and $8.00 for a gallon of milk!
What comes to mind when one hears the words, “Scottish Highlands?” Probably a romanticized version of brave men in tartans and green hills and craggy rocks, perhaps one hears bagpipes playing. It’s a pretty picture. But though the Highlands are romantic and green and craggy … they are also cold, wet, and terribly out of the way.
Since the downturn in 2008 and the bankruptcy of General Motors in 2009, many employers have discontinued defined benefit plans – commonly referred to as pensions. Many have either discontinued the plans or have frozen them as “cost saving” measures. Others have replaced these costlier plans with the less expensive 401k plans. A 401k is a way for employers to put money into a retirement plan, but only if the employee also contributes to the plan. These contributions are often referred to as “matching contributions” and come in all shapes and sizes. Some forward-thinking employers have also added a very valuable feature to their 401K plans called a “Roth 401k” Option.
Since becoming a fashion stylist, I’ve been asked more times than I can count about fashion dos and don’ts. I understand! Putting your best foot forward is important and no one likes to commit a fashion faux pas. Well, one thing is for sure – all the antiquated rules that have been followed for generations are in need of an update. This little Q&A will show you how to wear what you love without going by the book.
Celebrated September 15 to October 15, the observation started in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson as Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded on that to cover a 30-day period, and it was enacted into law in August 1988.
The days are growing shorter and the evening air is crisp and cool. The leaves are changing and autumn is upon us! I love this season – and what I like best about it is the food.
