Since becoming a fashion stylist, I’ve been asked more times than I can count about fashion dos and don’ts. I understand! Putting your best foot forward is important and no one likes to commit a fashion faux pas. Well, one thing is for sure – all the antiquated rules that have been followed for generations are in need of an update. This little Q&A will show you how to wear what you love without going by the book.
Q: Can I wear white after Labor Day?
A: Absolutely! White is a neutral that should not be limited to summer. Pair it with black and grey or even shades of brown and deep purple and suddenly, white is perfectly suitable for any season.
Q: Can I wear black and navy together?
A: Why not? This happens to be one of the most handsome color combinations that not only looks professional, but is also more interesting than typical monochromatic pairings. If you’re nervous about this combo, use an accessory with both colors to tie the look together.
Q: Can I mix silver and gold?
A: Certainly! Many jewelry designers are creating pieces with mixed metals, so you definitely can wear your silver and gold jewelry together for a bold, sophisticated look. Also, this is the perfect way to make a garment work that may be embellished with hardware that is different from your original jewelry choice.
A: Nonsense! With so many options available, it would be painfully limiting to always match your accessories. Mixing complimentary colors and patterns will give you much more creative freedom when putting a look together. Think “complementary” – not “perfectly matched.”
Although we’re being rebels, some rules are still necessary. Reserve linen for spring and summer, as well as eyelet and nautical colors. Also, save fur and fur-trimmed items for fall and winter.
