BROWSING:  Afterthought

French National Day – also known as Bastille Day – is celebrated throughout France each year on July 14 (or, le quatorze Juillet). For some, the observance is all about fireworks and a spectacular military parade; but for most, it still marks the anniversary of the storming of a grand fortress during the first moments of the French Revolution.

Clearly, fishing weather is upon us! Fishing season in Michigan runs May 26 through December 31 and Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend is June 9-10! That means all license fees will be waived, and a recreation passport will NOT be required for entry into state parks and recreation areas! Did you know … catfish, smallmouth bass, black crappie, walleye and bluegill are caught in abundance in our local parks? National Go Fishing Day is June 18. Celebrate by packing up your picnic, topping off your tackle box, and heading to one of Genesee County’s many great fishing spots!

With the warmer weather finally here, many of us are putting away the sweaters and cold weather clothing and taking inventory of our spring wardrobes. As this rite begins, we encounter those single, pathetic and unmatchable socks. All year long, they collect like weeds in the garden of our perfectly matched drawer-full of duos. The time has come to say goodbye.

This year, the Earth Day Network has made its mission clear: A World Without Plastic Pollution. The strategy adds a few more “Rs” to the old Reduce, Reuse, Recycle campaign. Ending plastic pollution will require us to Reduce, Refuse, Reuse, Recycle and Remove.

Superstition says it’s bad luck to open an umbrella indoors – that doing so will cause misfortune to rain down upon you from above. Well, March 13 is the day to test your fate: bust open your umbrella and hope for the best! But, if we all take part in National Open an Umbrella Indoors Day, won’t we all get poked by umbrellas? Never mind. Best practice: make sure you’re not too close to other people (or table lamps) before you begin testing this age-old notion.

Winter is officially halfway over … what better way to celebrate than by enjoying the sweet and tart, bright and citrusy flavor of grapefruit?

Rather than continuing the old New Year’s traditions of sipping bubbly and watching the “ball” drop, consider shaking the celebration up a bit. It’s YOUR New Year’s … make it NEW!

Reindeer, ornaments and snowmen knit right in … it’s Ugly Sweater Party Season!

No-Shave November is about more than embracing your inner Charlie Chaplin or Grizzly Adams. It began in the U.S. as a Facebook campaign in 2009, and encourages men to grow out their facial hair for cancer fundraising.

October 30 is National Candy Corn Day
