The race was on. In 1830, James Murray lived with his family in Superior, Washtenaw County in Michigan but wanted something more. After purchasing four acres of land in what is now known as Argentine, he moved his family with plans of starting his own mill. When he arrived, he quickly realized that someone was already working on that very same dream. William Bennett had moved into the area months earlier and was already making progress. Undaunted, Murray kicked himself into high gear. He first established a dam in what would become the village proper and then, worked day and night on his own mill while keeping a close eye on Bennett’s work. Soon enough, Murray’s mill was finished before Bennett even knew what was at stake. Bennett, upon realizing his defeat, moved south into Livingston County. Murray had won and quickly established the area’s first goods store, cooper shop, blacksmith shop and hotel. The future was bright.

For one local girl, life has taken an entirely different direction than what she planned. Born and raised in Flint, Kiara Tyler attended Notre Dame College in Cleveland, OH with a major in political science and minor in criminal justice. After getting her diploma in 2014, she came home to Flint and pursued fashion design, instead. And boy, has that decision payed off for this young entrepreneur! Starting out small, selling her apparel line out of her apartment and the trunk of her car, Tyler is now owner of Kalm Clothing – a very popular, modern, unisex streetwear brand that was showcased in New York City at New York Fashion Week in February. The Flint Youth Film Festival (FYFF) introduces the art of filmmaking to aspiring filmmakers ages 13-25. “It’s a way of getting young people interested in filmmaking,” says Justin Brown, Festival Director. On Friday, March 13, “Remember the Titans” will play at the historic Capitol Theatre at 7pm. Tickets are $10 per adult and $3 for children age 12 and under. For Genesee County Residents tickets are $5 per adult and only $1.50 for children age 12 and under. On Tuesday, March 10 Mott Community College is asking voters to approve continued bond funding for the college. A continuation of bond funding would allow MCC to pay for building renovations, capital improvements, and critical infrastructure projects.
