On Saturday, October 24, 2015, little ghouls and goblins came to the Flint Farmers’ Market for a healthy trick-or-treat outing: Food Day! Attendees were able to dress up in their Halloween costumes to enjoy healthy cooking demonstrations, food samples, recipes, food safety information, nutrition tips, and other fun activities.
An open-heart surgery shown on the dome in the planetarium … medical lectures for university students … these ideas, while at this time are “discussion only,” could be in the future for the Longway Planetarium in Flint.
Believe it or not, October has nearly come and gone. Before the month dances away completely, the 13th Annual Tapology Dance Festival is set to commence this weekend, October 23-25.
The Think Pink & Rock that Ribbon Zumbathon Charity Event will be held on Friday October 23rd at Insight Health & Fitness Center on 4500 S. Saginaw Street in Flint from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. The cost is $15 to participate. Proceeds will benefit Hurley’s Breast Cancer Navigation Program.

A net total of $69,300, will be donated to American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Jeepers creepers! After Dark is when the monsters come out! From 8pm to midnight on October 15, ghosts and goblins gathered at The Whiting to participate in all sorts of frightening fun. Attendees masqueraded around with their best, spine-chilling dance moves thanks to DJ Felix & Craig from Black Tie Productions. They were also able to Monster-Mash-it-up with a costume contest to win tickets to see Blue Man Group and Dracula. Ghoulish guests enjoyed witch’s brew drink specials during Happy Hour, as well as free food provided by Freakin’ Unbelievable Burgers. Did you attend this spook-tacular event?
It’s that time of year … when scary things happen and zombies are spotted all around the Greater Flint Area. My City Magazine went on a quest to see what they could dig up and we didn’t have to dig very far. Kristina Lakey of Flint is an interpreter for the deaf by day – but by night, she can be found shambling around town as a zombie. The founder and organizer of the Flint Zombie Walk, Kristina is transformed (through the use of artfully applied makeup and tattered clothing) into one of the hundreds of mindless creatures that take over Downtown on the first Saturday in October.
Flyball is great family entertainment and fun – just ask Cindy McLean, UAW Benefit Coordinator for General Motors, who has competed in tournaments with her team of dogs for 32 years. During competition, teams of four dogs race against each other and must jump over four hurdles, speeding toward a box that spring-releases a tennis ball. The dog must press a spring-loaded pad, catch the tennis ball and bring it back to its handler. According to Cindy, any dog can play flyball, but high-energy breeds such as border collies and whippets seem to excel in the sport.
Dr. Edilberto Moreno OB/GYN has been delivering babies for 28 years. Based in Grand Blanc, he is described as “a doctor who has a heart for his patients,” his warm smile and sense of humor immediately putting people at ease. Born in Cuba, Dr. Moreno always knew he wanted to be a doctor – his maternal grandfather was a physician. He never met his grandfather because he was killed in a car accident by a drunk driver before Edilberto was born, but he grew up listening to his grandmother’s stories about him, and playing with his grandfather’s medical instruments when he was a little boy. He remembers stories about how his grandmother would wake up in the morning and open the front door to find a live chicken on the steps – a payment for medical care. “He was paid with chickens, fruit, vegetables or rice,” he remembers.
Flint has been an inspiration to many who have hopes of either improving in their field of endeavor, or improving the city itself. Donovan Entrekin, Director of the Flint Institute of Arts’ Art School, continues to find beauty in his hometown and capture it in his artwork.
