Buick was an important part of Flint’s history – from 1904 until the closure of Buick City’s last operating assembly plant in June of 1999. Many My City readers have fond memories of working for Buick, and some of those readers come from generations of Buick workers. Here are some of their thoughts about it …

Back in 1968, when they were newlyweds, Dan and Ann Graham decided to join a club together; but it wasn’t books or bowling. This dog-loving couple chose the Companion Dog Training Club of Flint, and have been members ever since.

“I feel like I was born with a gift to dance. It’s something I have done all my life,” says Sheila Miller-Graham, Founder, CEO, Director, Instructor and Choreographer at Creative Expressions Dance Studio in Flint. With all of these titles, Graham’s first was a self-described “child entertainer,” having danced for her relatives at many big family dinners.

The number of homeless youth in Genesee County is staggering. The total count for homeless children in Flint/Genesee County equals 699: 651 of the them are with their families and the remaining 48 are unaccompanied.* Through REACH and Traverse Place, kids and families are getting the assistance they need to lead successful, fulfilling lives.

This month, Genesee District Library will host its 16th Annual Black History Month Brunch, a community event that recognizes people who make a positive impact in Genesee County. The GDL’s biggest event provides an opportunity for the community to celebrate the contributions of African Americans to world history. This year’s brunch is set for Saturday, February 11 at the Genesys Banquet and Conference Center in Grand Blanc.

Back in the early 1900s, a trolley was a common sight on the streets of Downtown Flint. And now, it’s back! The Downtown Flint Trolley made its inaugural run on January 12, offering free rides to residents, visitors, college students and anyone who wants to get around town a little more quickly. Downtown resident and volunteer, Kathleen Gazall, cut the ribbon at the debut event held at the Dryden Building. “I had always wanted a trolley in Downtown,” says Gazall. “We are very fortunate to have the funding and to have so many people work so hard to make it happen.”

Some people are very lucky to make a living doing something that is also their passion. Woody Brackney of Burton is one of those people; he has been a ski and snowboard instructor at Mt. Holly Ski & Snowboard Resort since 1972. “I started skiing for fun when I was 11 years old,” Woody says with a grin, “and it’s been non-stop ever since.” Not only is he an instructor, he is also a licensed official with the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association (USSA), officiating at races all around the country. He coached the Fenton High School Ski Team for 20 years and is now a coach with the Clarkston JV Ski Program.

For some people, Friday the 13th may be an unlucky day; but it was a pretty special day for residents of Genesee County. On Friday, January 13, the treehouse built last August by Treehouse Master, Pete Nelson and his crew at Genesee County’s For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum, was featured on an episode of Animal Planet’s Treehouse Masters!

Jake Reitano, 29, a Genesee County 911 telecommunicator, sits in front of five computer screens and is ready to receive 911 emergency voice calls from residents in need. As of six months ago, he can respond to 911 text messages – from those who might be facing a circumstance in which using their voice could escalate their dangerous situation.

On January 26th, The Flint River Watershed Coalition (FRWC) held its Voice of the River Annual Celebration at Whiting Auditorium.
