In the Regional Technology Center on the Mott Community College campus, the “FabLab” (Digital Fabrication Laboratory) is a place where students, community members, and business owners can use digital tools to turn their inventive ideas into tangible products. The college sees the lab as a way to support creativity and provide access to sophisticated equipment at a reasonable cost.
Every hour, over 100 infants die from hypothermia – 140, to be exact. Worldwide, almost four million infants die each year during the neonatal period (0-27 days) in areas where hypothermia is a leading cause of mortality.* The good news: something is being done about it, right here in Michigan.
Since 1919, Kettering University has been training engineers, managers, designers and technicians. With Flint’s automotive history, it seems fitting to include a lab dedicated to car crash safety. However, the first crash safety course was not offered at Kettering until 2001. The Crash Safety Center opened in August 2005 in the Mott Science and Engineering building, bringing together university life, industry, and community members, such as doctors and K-12 students. The only lab in the world that extends its services to undergraduate courses, it celebrated its tenth anniversary in August. Much has been accomplished in the past decade.
Patriot Ambulance Service of Flint is one of the most technologically advanced ambulance services in the country. From digital dispatches to call prediction software, Patriot has created a new standard for emergency response organizations. With an average response time of six minutes – 2.59 minutes lower than the national average – Patriot’s technology recently shifted into a higher gear – a Chevy Camaro, called an “Echo Unit,” can now be dispatched to life-threatening situations.
