For decades, a mammogram was a woman’s only choice for breast cancer screening. However, after seven years of tedious research, a local doctor, David A. Strahle, MD has perfected an alternate screening method – specifically for women who have dense breast tissue.
We are lucky to live in this generation. There are many reasons why this is true; but from my perspective, one reason is the availability of very good childhood screening for medical conditions. One needs to look no further than the recent screening for lead levels in Flint kids, and the aftermath of the discoveries that were made.
Genesys was the nation’s first hospital and pharmacy to receive the new Medication Compounding Certification from The Joint Commission (TJC). This newly created certification assures safe IV medication for patients and follows national standards for sterile compounding. Back in February when the survey occurred, TJC surveyors reported that the Genesys Pharmacy set the bar very high for the rest of pharmacies nationwide. Being chosen first and meeting TJC expectations is a great point of pride for the Genesys pharmacy team who has worked diligently for the past several years to assure the best sterile medication compounding practices are followed.
The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association awarded Genesys with the “Get with the Guidelines” Stroke Gold Plus achievement award and the Target: Stroke Honor Roll award for its excellent process improvement efforts in treating stroke patients. Hospitals receiving the Gold Plus achievement award have reached an aggressive goal of treating stroke patients with 85 percent or higher compliance to core standard levels of care for 24 consecutive months.

Genesys Health System is teaming up with the Grand Blanc Fire Department to offer monthly car seat inspection stations. Starting Wednesday, October 11 from 4-7PM, parents can stop by the Grand Blanc Fire Department, located at 117 High St., for a car seat safety check.
Binesh Patel, MD has been named Chief Medical Officer of McLaren Flint. He began the position in June.
In July, Hurley Medical Center celebrated the success of the “Panda Warmer Project” for its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). My City was there to capture the heartwarming occasion featuring a pup, a panda cake, and newborn twins!

McLaren Family Residency Center is pleased to welcome board-certified family and sports medicine physician, Hussein Saghir, DO, CAQSM, to its practice. Dr. Saghir completed a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine through Wayne State University School of Medicine at Detroit Medical Center and a residency in family medicine at Genesys Regional Medical Center. He received his medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Kettering University, the school well-known for its ties to the automotive industry and its engineering programs, quietly launched a Pre-Med program in 2008. Although still a surprise to many, Kettering’s Pre-Med has been bulldogging its students into med school at an outstanding acceptance rate according to program coordinator, Dr. Stacy Seeley. The program, similar to Kettering’s other degree programs, focuses heavily on experiential learning.
The Association for Ambulatory Behavioral Healthcare (AABH) recently recognized the McLaren Flint Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program as a finalist for National Partial Hospital Program of the Year. Mark Sak, Program Manager and Ken Deighton, Director of Behavioral Health Services accepted the award on July 16 at the AABH Annual Conference in Long Beach, CA.
