There are many students in the Greater Flint Area who contribute to the College Town atmosphere. This year, there were 8,937 students who enrolled to attend Mott Community College. Overall, there were 30,000 students pursuing higher education at University of Michigan-Flint, 9,000 at Baker College and 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students attending Kettering University. Adding to the College Town experience are several satellite campuses in the Greater Flint Area that offer training and opportunities to traditional and nontraditional students. My City Magazine will explore the economic impact these institutions have on the area.

Thousands of runners will hit the bricks of Downtown Flint on the third Saturday in August – to run, walk or wheel in the 39th Annual HealthPlus Crim Festival of Races. While runners from all over the world participate, the heart and soul of this event are the dedicated competitors from the Greater Flint area, who return year after year, and are proud to call Flint home. According to Race Director, Andy Younger, some Michigan runners will be recognized this year with a special “Made in Michigan” award. “And there is so much talent right here in Flint,” Younger says. Runners registered in the 39th annual race have a chance for a guaranteed spot next year in the 40th annual milestone, at which they are expecting a record-breaking number of participants. My City Magazine caught up with some of the local runners to talk about their dedication to the Crim and their hometown.03

Darkened under shadows of the city’s economic hardship, Flint’s vast Mott Park acreage is split by the Flint River and connected by a quaint pedestrian bridge. Old tennis courts sport new nets, a freshly-painted playground still has a cool rocket ship slide that has stood the test of time, and a once lively golf course known for years as the park’s centerpiece all patiently wait for a new vision to permanently take hold of this historic park.

The new Genesys PACE facility held its open house Thursday, July 30th from 5pm to 7pm. The PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) facility allows 55 and over residents to remain independent, while still receiving round-the-clock medical and supportive services, whether they are at the facility, or in their own homes. PACE’s interdisciplinary team provides a comprehensive, unique, and – sometimes – fun method of care for those who need it. The PACE facility in downtown Flint is the exclusive provider for Genesee County. PACE will be welcoming the arrival of its scheduled participants on August 1st.

What is the definition of domestic violence? It is defined by the Department of Justice as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions – or threats of actions that influence another person.

In a three-part series, My City Magazine is examining the effect that the increasing number of students has on our economy and how educational institutions are impacting the revitalization of the Greater Flint area.
