If there’s one word that describes the content in every issue of My City, it’s VARIETY! With 2016 now behind us, we thought it would be fun to re-visit some reader-favorites.

There are two things Glenn and Essence Wilson have in common: they love their hometown and they love helping people. The couple who founded Communities First, Inc. a non-profit organization committed to promoting and providing an improved quality of life for residents through economic development and affordable housing solutions, is doing just that – helping people build a better community.

 

From the humblest of beginnings, Thomas Yeotis emerged to lead the most blessed of lives. In fact, when he recalls his youth, emotion still overcomes the beloved, retired judge and Greater Flint Sports Hall of Fame and Mott Community College Bruin Club Co-founder, who turns 87 years old this month.

Throughout 2016, many local organizations, programs and events celebrated milestone anniversaries. My City congratulates all these fantastic groups for their contributions to enriching the Greater Flint community.

On November 9, 2016, the Junior League of Flint hosted its annual Bus Tour. The free tour started at Ele’s Place, then toured its other community partners: The Shelter of Flint and the YWCA. At each facility, attendees received a tour and historical background.

The Urban Entrepreneurship Initiative (UEI) announced the successful completion of its third annual Urban Entrepreneurship Symposium, which was held in Flint from October 19 to 21.

About six decades ago, a young Jessie McFadden walked the campus paths of Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical & Normal College (AM&N) not knowing she’d accomplish so much. She would relocate to Michigan, celebrate 58 years of marriage to Charles Muldrew, have three children and five grandchildren; earn an associate’s degree from Mott Community College, a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University, a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University, and then return to Michigan State University to earn a doctor of philosophy degree (Ph.D.); retire from a 27-year career in the Flint School System, serve on many boards, own an iPhone, text, operate PowerPoint presentations; and earn many awards and accolades from her peers, fellow educators, and community members.  

On Tuesday, October 18, 2016, Jon Morey, DC, MCT, and a local Chiropractic Physician, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at Great Lakes Chiropractic and Movement Center, located in the Valley Plaza at 4215 Miller Road, in Flint Township.

Whaley Children’s Center held a ribbon cutting ceremony for their newly named school, the LaFontaine Learning Academy today, October 18th at 9am.

Kettering University professor, Dr. Matthew Sanders, has taught Industrial Engineering at Kettering University since 1999. He holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Texas Tech University, with expertise in engineering economy, systems analysis, and project management.
