Thankfulness is more than simply saying “thank you.” For followers of Jesus, gratitude is a way of recognizing that everything we have ultimately comes from God. When we understand how much God has given us, thankfulness should go beyond words and shape how we treat and serve others.
The Bible tells us, “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Notice that Scripture does not say to give thanks only when everything is going well. We are called to remain thankful even during difficult seasons because our gratitude is rooted in who God is, not simply in our circumstances.
One of the greatest reasons we have to be thankful is the grace we have received through Jesus Christ. We could never earn salvation on our own, yet God loved us enough to send His Son: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
Gratitude and generosity belong together. A thankful heart recognizes God’s blessings, while a generous heart asks, “How can I use what God has given me to bless someone else?”
When we truly understand God’s generosity toward us, it should make us more generous toward others.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly calls His people to care for those around them. Galatians 6:10 says, “So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people.” Helping others doesn’t always require something dramatic. Sometimes it means providing a meal, encouraging someone who is struggling, giving financially, helping a neighbor, visiting someone lonely, or simply taking the time to listen.
Jesus demonstrated this kind of life throughout His ministry. He noticed people others overlooked. He fed the hungry, cared for the hurting, welcomed outsiders, and showed compassion to those in need. As followers of Christ, we are called to demonstrate that same compassion.
Gratitude and generosity belong together. A thankful heart recognizes God’s blessings, while a generous heart asks, “How can I use what God has given me to bless someone else?”
This season, take time to reflect on the many ways God has been faithful to you. Thank Him for His provision, His grace, and the people He has placed in your life. Most importantly, thank Him for the greatest gift of all, the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.
If you have never accepted that gift, or you simply want to better understand what it means to have a relationship with Jesus, text GOSPEL to 97000. We would love to provide free resources to help you learn more and take your next step in faith.
Then allow that gratitude to become action.
Look around. Someone near you may need encouragement, help, generosity, or simply someone who cares.
