Since being purchased by Dave and Kristie McDowell in 2019, Willow Brook Golf Club has seen a surge in community support and popularity. Willow Brook features a public 18-hole golf course, restaurant and bar, and event hosting and catering.

Located in Byron, Michigan—Dave and Kristie’s hometown—Willow Brook is more than just a business venture; it’s a family rooted passion.

“We love our hometown. It’s quiet and cozy,” Kristie shared.

The McDowells, who have been married for 23 years, have two daughters. Their oldest, Alexis, 23, recently graduated from Northern Michigan University and now works as an investor relations manager for Shiawassee County. She also manages the bar at the restaurant. Their younger daughter, Taylor, 22, leads the golf course maintenance department.

When asked what made them consider buying a golf course and restaurant, Kristie joked, “We have no good reason why we made the purchase.”

Despite the humor, the results speak for themselves. One standout feature of Willow Brook’s restaurant is its farm-to-table approach.

Kristie explained that Dave and Taylor manage the family farm, which supplies much of the meat served at the restaurant.
“We have a variety of heifers, steers, cows, and pigs—Black Angus, Herefords—and our pigs are Durocs,” she said.

Since purchasing the property in 2019, the McDowells have made numerous improvements to both the golf course and the restaurant.

“This restaurant had never been open year-round until we purchased it,” Kristie noted. “Our little town is small, so we offer a lot during the winter months—trivia nights, craft nights, line dancing, and much more.”

Just like the golf course, the restaurant is open to the public and welcomes both locals and visitors.

Live entertainment has become a regular feature at Willow Brook, with local artists performing on Friday nights—a night that also features the ever-popular Fish Fry.

“Friday nights at the restaurant are more low-key—a relaxing evening where friends and family can enjoy great music and great food,” Kristie said. “We also host bands on select Saturdays.”

For first-time diners, Kristie recommends starting with a burger. “Maybe I’m a little biased because I know where the meat is raised,” she said.

The restaurant also features a full bar, including a wide selection of high-end bourbons and tequilas, in addition to all the standard options.

Reservations are not required, and service animals are welcome.

“We’re 100% family friendly,” Kristie said. “Sometimes you’ll catch all of us working together. Even our extended family is always willing to lend a helping hand.”

To both regulars and newcomers, Kristie extends a warm invitation:

“Come enjoy a round of golf or stop by for some great food. We’d love to meet new faces.”
