Life is a runway, every day is a new day, fashion is circular … no need in looking back, what’s old will be new again.

Passion Item

Fur Felt Stetson Fedora

Fashion Advice

“Go with your first mind. Style is a deeply personal expression of who you are and usually, your first mind reflects your true, unique identity.

On Being One of Greater Flint’s Best Dressed:

I put some thought into how I present myself to the world each day. My style of dress is inextricably tied to my personality. It’s good to know that others like my style, but it isn’t the most important thing – clothes are still just clothes. It is our actions by which we all truly should be judged.

JR Kirtek

Chief Meteorologist ABC12

My Signature Style

I think the best way to describe it is “business fun.” I wear some patterns and colors and ties that consultants in the media industry don’t typically recommend. I like to “dress the weather,” too. When it’s sunny and hot, I’ll get into some light colors.

Favorite Designers & Shops

I shop anywhere and everywhere. I’m always looking for colors and patterns that I don’t have in my closet.

My Fashion Hero

My wife, Kathy. She’s the director of breast imaging at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit. She doesn’t leave the house unless she’s totally put together – it’s awesome! She even rocks the lab coat when she has to!

A Fashion Memory

An ABC 12 viewer called the station during the 11pm news and wanted to buy my tie! I told him he could have the tie in exchange for a donation to the Flint Diaper Bank. In our wideshot at the end of the broadcast, there I was, sans tie!

Passion Item

My pocket squares – when I started working in TV news in the 80s, there weren’t many of us guys who wore them. I’ve stuck with it ever since. I really enjoy the pattern play going on with those now. I never wear a matching tie and pocket square – that’s a big fashion no-no in my book!

Fashion Advice

Make sure you look good from head to toe. That means that you have to complete your ensemble with nicely polished shoes. Not everyone can pull off the suit-and-sneaker thing.

On Being One of Greater Flint’s Best Dressed

I’d like to thank my mom for nominating me, and I’d also credit Sears and “Garanimals” in the 1970s for preparing me to receive such an honor. Matching tigers with tigers and giraffes with giraffes got me started!

Yvette Martin

Administrative Assistant
(Retired)

My Signature Style

I think I create a special touch of elegance with my outfits.

Favorite Designer & Shops

I love to step out in Via Christina, Juliette, Champagne Elite – just a few of my favorites.

Fashion Hero

Billie Blair – a Flint native and of course, one of the Ebony Fashion Fair Top Models, among much more.

A Fashion Memory

My very first fashion experience was when I hit the runway for Edwards School of Modeling in Flint at the age of 12. The “fashion monster” in me was created.

Passion Items

Accessorizing is key for me: shoes, coats, boots, statement jewelry and handbags create your look.

Fashion Advice

First impressions last! You never know who you’re going to run into – always look your best.

On Being One of  Greater Flint’s Best Dressed

Being nominated is certainly an honor! Fashion is an art that gives life a level of excitement and fun. So, let the fun begin!

LaTashia Perry

Children’s Book Author,Lactation Counselor

My Signature Style

Boho, vintage, colorful

Favorite Designer & Shops

I don’t really have a favorite designer, but I’m obsessed with thrift stores!

Fashion Heroes

Tracee Ellis Ross, Solange Knowles

A Fashion Memory

I had a fashion feature on ABC News for about 18 months called, “Mama Gone Thrifting.” I shared fashion tips on a budget, shopping at Goodwill. I also wrote a blog sharing fashion advice.

Passion Item

Mom Jeans! My fave – every woman should own a pair. Wear them with white Converse and a simple turtleneck.

Fashion Advice

Don’t be afraid to mix prints and unusual colors. Also, think outside the box. Your clothes speak for you long before you open your mouth. And remember: just because you’re a mom doesn’t mean you can’t look fabulous! Lastly, 90% of the clothes I wear are secondhand – expensive doesn’t always mean better.

On Being One of Greater Flint’s Best Dressed

Many know me as a writer or the “Boobie Lady” (LOL), but fashion has always been my first love. So, this nomination was so fun and exciting and gave me another format to show off my talents! Just give me a few bucks and I promise I can find an outfit that’s “magazine ready.”

Nicholas Robinson

Attorney

My Signature Style

My “work uniform” is a dark suit with a crisp, white or blue shirt and tie always tied with a four-in-hand knot. Outside of work, you’ll find me in a t-shirt, jeans and a baseball hat.

Favorite Shop

Shift in Downtown Flint is focused more on women’s apparel, but I admire the brand they are building. Also, the teams involved with Bedrock Apparel and Goodboy Clothing are doing really interesting, forward-thinking work.

Fashion Memories

1) The day I put on, for the first time, the only accessory that really matters: my wedding ring; and 2) My high school baseball coach, Bill Hillman,  would always say, “If you look good, you play good.” That always stuck with me.

Passion Item

Watches. I rotate between four: a Hamilton Khaki King, Omega Seamaster, Rolex Datejust II and a Hamilton ETO. If there is something that I’m looking for, my friend, Ronny Medawar, always has the answer.

Fashion Advice

Find a tailor! You can buy a suit at any price point, and a talented tailor can make it look great. I recommend Ben at Ben’s Tailoring in Flint Township.

On Being One of Greater Flint’s Best Dressed

It’s very flattering! It is always nice to be recognized and included with such a great group of people.

My Fashion Hero

My deceased brother, Alvin Vickers, was always dapper.

A Fashion Memory

My wife and I hosted a choir banquet and she wore a beige gown. She wanted my suit to coordinate with it, but I didn’t have anything. She, being a tailor, made me a foxtail tuxedo which everyone raved about!

Passion Item

My dress shirt and tie must speak to the suit I’m wearing.

Fashion Advice

It’s imperative that your suit, etc. fits well – so you need a good tailor such as I have to fit you to a tee. My wife, Karen, at Tailoring by Blackwell will make sure of that!

On Being One of Greater Flint’s Best Dressed

I’m not the type of person to say, “Hey! Look at me!” but I love suits and want to look nice. Thank you, My City, for the opportunity – what a privilege!
