7 Questions with… Emily DoerrDirector of Planning & Development City of Flint

The City of Flint and Mayor Sheldon Neeley recently welcomed a new staff member in Emily Doerr, Director of Planning and Development.

Bringing a wealth of experience in the industry, Doerr has worked alongside many key community development and economic entities throughout the state. She most recently led the Michigan State Land Bank Authority and previously served as Community Economic Development Program Manager for the City of Flint’s HOME, ESG and CDBG programs, and in this role she oversaw the creation and implementation of a housing investment strategy for the city to ensure future housing development that will benefit residents, stakeholders and the city as a whole.

“Emily brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in municipal and state government and will spearhead the transformation of our Planning and Development Department into a concierge service for both residents and businesses,” Mayor Neeley commented.

The Flint resident and 2003 Goodrich High School grad graduated from Central Michigan University and earned a Master of Business Administration from University of Detroit Mercy in 2012.

A big fan of bike riding and adventurous city lovers, Doerr founded Flint City Bike Tours in 2019. In addition, she has completed nine half-marathons! She recently realized a personal entrepreneurial goal when she opened Queens’ Provisions, a charcuterie, beer and wine shop located just north of the Flint River in Downtown’s historic Carriage Town Neighborhood.

1. What’s something people would never guess about you?

I had the privilege of seeing Nelson Mandela speak in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2007.

2. At a party, where can someone find you?

I will be singing karaoke, playing darts or bartending.

3. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

 

Gnocchi Alla Bava from El Barzon Restaurante in Southwest Detroit.

4. What makes you laugh the most?

Catching up with old friends and recalling the ridiculously fun times/adventures we have shared together.

5. What is the best gift you have received?

My divorce at 31 was the gift that got me away from the perfectionism of my youth and instead, taught me to be bold with my directness and honesty every day. My life has been so much more fulfilling ever since.

6. What types of music are you into?

Some of my favorites are the Dave Matthews Band, The Beatles, The Black Keys, Carole King and New Orleans brass bands – and Flint’s own Mama Sol!

7. If you had a warning label, what would yours say?

“WARNING: Adventure ahead! Buckle up!”
