My interest in law began early, inspired by watching my uncle manage apartment buildings in the Bronx. Seeing the challenges of property ownership sparked my interest in real estate. Later, studying finance and accounting at Michigan State University laid the foundation for my estate planning, business, and real estate law practice. Estate planning became a passion once I saw how easily families could fall into conflict without proper planning. It’s rewarding to help clients gain clarity, prevent disputes, and feel secure about their future.
Practicing in this region for nearly 30 years has shaped both my approach and the development of our firm, CFLEGAL, PC (formerly Christenson & Fiederlein, PC). Our main office is in downtown Flint, close to the courthouse, giving us an ideal hub for handling real estate, probate, business, and civil litigation. We also maintain a satellite office in Grand Blanc.
Our firm includes three attorneys: Rick Hetherington, who handles criminal defense, real estate matters, and family law; Austin Church, our associate and legal writer who manages litigation, landlord work, and complex court matters; and me, with nearly three decades of experience in real estate, probate, business, and estate planning. Our former partner, Chris Christenson, now serves as a judge in the region—something we are proud of and consider part of our firm’s heritage.
As for current trends, long-term care costs continue to rise, making asset protection and Medicaid planning increasingly important for families. More people are planning earlier to avoid crisis-driven decisions. In real estate, title defects, land disputes, and multigenerational transfers are becoming more common. Careful planning and legal oversight during transactions will be critical for families and businesses navigating these issues.
When I’m not in the office, I enjoy spending time outdoors—hiking, traveling Up North, and being with my wife, Nancy; our daughters, Melanie and Emma; and our golden retriever, Junie B. I also attend numerous community and business events and remain active in local organizations. I have served as Past Board Member and President of the Genesee County Bar Association, former Board Member of the Grand Blanc Chamber of Commerce, and former Board Member of the Genesee Landlords Association. Staying engaged in the community has helped me build relationships, support local initiatives, and stay connected to the people I serve.
