Water, water everywhere; but not a drop to drink. It is an irony paralleled in our world today, where both social media followers and loneliness are at an all-time high. We are “interacting” with more people than ever, yet statistics show that people are feeling less and less known. Perhaps you feel it too: lonely in a sea of people.
If you have ever felt lonely, you are in “good” company. The Bible recounts numerous people who felt isolated, unseen, unknown, abandoned, or alone. King David cried out in Psalm 25:16, “I am lonely and afflicted.” Elijah the prophet, filled with exhaustion and fear, despaired in the wilderness. Jesus Christ, in His moment of deepest agony on the cross, cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Maybe it is surprising to see Jesus included in this list. But that is what makes Christianity so unique. Hebrews 4 explains that Jesus fully experienced the human condition. We can know that He understands. Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses because He was tempted in every way we are, yet was without sin.
He knows all that we are and all that we have done, and still He invites us into a personal relationship with Him.
Sin, in its simplest explanation, is anything we think, say, or do that goes against God’s will. Jesus was without sin, but we are not. The Bible tells us, “All have sinned” (Romans 3:23). Sin separates us from God, which is the ultimate loneliness. He created us to be known and loved by Him. Guilt and shame build walls of isolation, and the fear of being rejected for what we believe is hidden can fuel self-condemnation.
The Bible illustrates this in John 4:4-42. While traveling through Samaria, Jesus encounters a woman at a well. This woman had a troubled past, and her life choices likely caused her to be rejected by her community. She understood rejection and loneliness. Jesus speaks with her, and during their conversation, He reveals that He knows the truth about her situation, past and present. She was not met with condemnation; she was met with transformative love.
She experienced being fully known and fully loved by the One who could forgive her and set her free from guilt and shame. This woman responded by running back to her village and telling everyone, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did!” She had found the answer to loneliness in Jesus, and she was eager to share Him with others.
The Bible tells us we are known by our Creator, God. He knows all that we are and all that we have done, and still He invites us into a personal relationship with Him. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Jesus is the answer to everything, including loneliness. His love is transformative and has the power to set you free from guilt and shame. Will you allow Him to fully know you and love you?
