SeptemberA Season of New Beginnings and Lasting Remembrance

September is a month of transition. Summer slowly loosens its grip as cooler mornings arrive, leaves begin their colorful transformation, and familiar routines return. It is a month that reminds us life is always moving forward, carrying with it fresh opportunities while asking us to rememberwhere we’ve been.

For students, September signals a new school year filled with fresh notebooks, new teachers, new friendships and the anticipation of discovering what lies ahead. College campuses spring back to life as thousands of young adults begin another chapter of learning and independence. Parents, too, experience their own transition, watching children grow just a little more with every passing school year.

Across Michigan, Friday night lights once again illuminate football fields as communities gather to cheer on hometown teams. Saturdays belong to college football, where traditions spanning generations unite families and alumni in stadiums filled with school colors, marching bands and familiar fight songs. Whether celebrating a victory or enduring a tough loss, sports remind us that teamwork, perseverance and community often matter as much as the final score.

September also marks the unofficial beginning of harvest season. Farmers gather the rewards of months of hard work, while apple orchards, cider mills and pumpkin patches welcome families eager to embrace autumn traditions. Cooler temperatures encourage us to spend time outdoors hiking colorful trails, visiting local festivals or simply enjoying the changing landscape. For something fun to do, families won’t want to miss the 54th annual St. John Applefest in Fenton from Sept. 17-20 put on by St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

For many, September is also a time to reset personal goals. The structure of a new school year often inspires adults to revisit projects, establish healthier routines or pursue new ambitions. In many ways, September feels like a second New Year’s Day, offering another chance to begin again before the calendar turns toward winter.

Yet amid these hopeful beginnings, September also carries one of our nation’s most solemn anniversaries. On Sept. 11, Americans pause to remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost in the terrorist attacks of 2001. More than two decades later, the images remain unforgettable, but so does the extraordinary courage displayed by first responders, military personnel, volunteers and ordinary citizens who answered the call to help others.

The anniversary serves not only as a day of remembrance, but also as a reminder of resilience. It encourages us to value freedom, extend kindness to our neighbors and recognize that unity often emerges during our most difficult moments. The sacrifices made that day, and in the years that followed, deserve both our gratitude and our commitment to never forget.

Perhaps that is September’s greatest lesson. It teaches us that life is a balance of reflection and renewal. We honor the past while embracing the future. We celebrate accomplishments while preparing for new challenges. We gather with family, friends and neighbors, appreciating both the ordinary moments and the extraordinary milestones that shape our lives.

As autumn begins to unfold, September invites us to slow down, look ahead with optimism and carry forward the lessons that history, family and community continue to teach us. It is, above all, a season of hope rooted in remembrance and strengthened by the promise of new beginnings.
