Meet Montana, Guiness, Phoebe, Nevaeh and Thor
Some dogs come into a shelter and find their forever homes quickly. Others wait… and wait… and wait some more.
For dogs who spend months — sometimes even longer — in a shelter, each day can feel the same. The sounds are louder. The kennels feel smaller. They watch families walk past, hoping this will be the moment someone stops for them. While shelters do everything possible to provide love, enrichment, and care, it’s never the same as having a home of their own.
Long-term shelter dogs are often overlooked, not because they aren’t wonderful, but because they may be shy at first, need to be the only pet, be a little older, or simply haven’t caught the right person’s eye yet. But these dogs have so much love to give. They form deep bonds, they are incredibly loyal, and they seem to understand what it means to finally belong.
When you adopt from the Humane Society of Genesee County, you’re not just giving a dog a home — you’re giving them a second chance at life.

Choosing a dog who has been waiting a long time is a special kind of compassion. It’s telling them, “You were worth the wait.” And in return, you’ll receive a love that is grateful, steadfast, and unconditional.
Somewhere in a kennel right now, a dog is hoping today is the day someone sees them — truly sees them — and says, “You’re coming home with me.”
