National Ice Cream Day! 0

afterthought0717-1If you grew up in this area, you’ve probably enjoyed a scoop or two of Superman ice cream on a summer day – but did you know that the enduring flavor favorite was created right here in Michigan?

Although exact details are elusive, the origin of Superman is traced back to the Stroh’s Ice Cream company founded in Detroit – an offshoot of the Stroh Brewing Company, which turned to producing ice cream during Prohibition. Stroh’s colorful combination of red pop, blue moon and lemon ice cream flavors quickly became a favorite, with other regional variations popping up all over the state.

Celebrate National Ice Cream Day by enjoying this Michigan original … or better yet, have some right now!
