Dear Readers,

I have two words: Early snow. Here’s two more: great faces! Our staff photographer, Mike Naddeo, went Downtown during that mid-November blizzard to snap some folks doing their thing, dealing with the unpredictable weather as all Michiganders do. See Snowmageddon And, that’s all I’m going to say about the weather.

Since Day One, our mission has been to highlight the positive, the great things about Greater Flint, and we’re constantly surprised. I bet you’ve never heard of Forgotten Man Ministries and its role at the Genesee County Jail. If you need a story to lift you up, “Freedom in Cell Block 5B” and the related story on pp. 16-17. This type of program for inmates has significantly reduced recidivism rates in other counties, and with enough support, it can continue to change lives. We’re grateful to Sheriff Robert Pickell for helping us tell you about it.

Another must-read story: “A Stone’s Throw from Battleship Row,” as we remember the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting the subject of this piece – Grand Blanc resident Louise Kinsman, a Pearl Harbor survivor – and we are so happy she shared her story with us.

For the team at MCM, it’s all about sharing stories. Many pages are dedicated to people with unique talents, such as Flint native, Tunde Olaniran – he’s making it happen in the music industry – be sure to check him out. On the other end of the spectrum is pastel artist, Tom Tomasek, who captures scenes that are uniquely Michigan. I know you can relate to his work.

Also in this issue, you’ll find many stories about generous people. Did you know that prominent members of the local legal community serve a holiday meal to hundreds of hungry people every Christmas? While some of us worry about having enough wrapping paper, many are dealing with serious personal struggles. Members of the team at Genesee Health System talked with MCM about the challenges of helping people during this time of year.

It’s no secret, the holidays are difficult for many people. So many are facing hardships you could never imagine. If you’re able, give what you can – it always comes back around to you. There are several organizations mentioned in this issue that are dedicated to helping those most in need.

Finally, we wrap up our “Small Town Spotlight” series with Holly, an historic town that has a great holiday spirit. However you find it or help others to find it, I wish you joy during this season.

Thanks for reading.
