Dear Readers,

Happy New Year!

As we start a new decade, it’s logical to think about our health and all the advancements in medicine that we’ll see in the years ahead. On the cover is a machine that delivers proton therapy to cancer patients – and it’s right here in Flint! Located on the campus of the Karmanos Cancer Institute, the McLaren Proton Therapy Center is treating patients with fantastic success. Read about this amazing technology and our interview with the Center’s Medical Director, Dr. Hesham.

In the Wellness spotlight this quarter is baby and child health. Right here in Flint at Hurley Medical Center is the region’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We talked to Medical Director, Dr. Ranjan Monga about his experience on the team of experts who deliver the highest level of specialized care to around 800 infants every year in the NICU.

For this issue, I stepped back “Inside the O.R.” to observe two procedures. One was performed to repair a brain aneurysm – fascinating. These opportunities have been a highlight of my life and I am grateful to the local surgeons who allow me to take part in bringing this series to our readers.

In the baby and child health section are articles written by many local health professionals – it’s a great variety, from obesity and pregnancy to the benefits of breastfeeding – little ones, head to toe. Our thanks to all the authors for their expert contributions to this issue.

We profile a group of health care providers who were 2019 My City Wellness Award winners. And there’s much more in this issue, all with the local connection our readers enjoy.

Thanks for reading and be well.
