Dear Readers,

Happy New Year!

It’s hard not to fall into offering the typical clichés – “here’s to better times ahead” and “out with the old, in with the new!” But, as we look back at the impactful moments of our last 12-month journey, good and bad, we’re all wondering what 2024 will bring. Here’s hoping that we can see our struggles starting to fade in the rearview mirror.

For some less fortunate people in our community, brighter days are impossible to imagine. If you’re reading this, chances are good that you live in a home with a warm bed where you can rest. Many, many people in Genesee County sleep in a car or an abandoned building. Every night, over 200 sleep in emergency shelters. One such place is Shelter of Flint; you’ve heard of it – it’s been around for 40 years. It’s so much more than a place to sleep.

Did you know that 2-3% of children in the U.S. don’t have a bed to sleep in? Right here in Greater Flint is a chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace – a national outreach program with the mission: NO KID SLEEPS ON THE FLOOR IN OUR TOWN!® After a decade of publishing MCM, it’s amazing that we still learn about local organizations we have not yet highlighted that are doing such great work. When this article was written, the volunteer crews at SHP had built and delivered 259 beds in three counties and there were 300 applications for beds pending. You can help – read about it in this issue!

Another topic we never run out of: women who set huge goals and smash them! We have two this month. Just beginning her journey toward a career in the military is Natalie Steward, a Goodrich High student and JROTC Cadet who recently achieved the state’s Top Marksman status – outstanding! Read more about her and the many young people excelling in this pursuit at Genesee Career Institute. And, nearing the pinnacle of her career as an NBA referee is Jenna Schroeder – read about this trailblazer’s impressive career path. As always, there’s much more to enjoy in this issue.

And so begins another year with MCM sharing more great stories about inspiring people achieving their dreams and helping to change the lives of their fellow citizens. Haven’t made any resolutions? Here’s a good one: If you enjoy reading My City, resolve to subscribe.

Cheers to 2024! Let’s begin this New Year with positive energy and prayers for peace and prosperity. GO BLUE!
