Dear Readers,

As it has since 2019, the year’s final issue of My City features our choice for Greater Flint’s “Cityzen of the Year.” Be sure to read about Dr. Dallas Gatlin, who is retiring from his 14-year position as the devoted executive director of Carriage Town Ministries. We wish him a happy and healthy retirement journey with his family and are proud to offer him this special tribute. Congratulations, Dr. Gatlin!

Team My City is always grateful to have this platform for recognizing outstanding community members, as well as bringing you stories that cover the ongoing renewal in Greater Flint. Check out “Big Things Ahead” – very exciting projects are in the works that will have a significant impact on the community. We have exclusive details!

Another topic we enjoy featuring is the arts, and we never need to look very far to find a local subject to highlight. Read about the dedicated Flint School of Performing Arts students who study and perform with the Flint Youth Ballet, and the men who enjoy the brotherhood of the Flint Male Chorus – it’s been around for 80 years! Perhaps you can get into the holiday spirit and catch their Christmas concert in Swartz Creek on December 9.

For many of us, this season stirs nostalgic thoughts; we reminisce fondly about past holidays and simpler times. We have a collection of historical images of Greater Flint, including Smith-Bridgman’s all decked out for Christmas … the good ol’ days. And we might as well talk about it: winter is officially here. If you’re the adventurous type, you might take a look at our suggestions for things to do out in the snow. Ice-climbing, anyone?

There’s much more in this issue, including a list of local charitable organizations that are especially grateful for donations during the holidays. Things are tough out there for so many people during this season, even when the economy is strong. If you are able, nothing feels as good as reaching out to help someone in need have a Merry Christmas.

Whatever holiday you celebrate, I wish you all a season filled with the love of friends and family.

Thanks for reading!
