Dear Readers,

Let the holiday season begin! It seems like some community members and local retailers started getting ready for Christmas back in August but, hey – no judgment here. Let’s take a look at this month’s great content.

While I personally have never been “inked”, tattoos are an artform I frequently admire on others. We have a story about a local tattoo shop owner/artist and former criminal, Travis Crossley, who got a second chance – and is giving one to others who made similar mistakes in their lives.

Second chances can be hard to come by. In Greater Flint, it is estimated that 15-40% of the homeless population is military veterans. To address this issue, Catholic Charities of Shiawassee & Genesee Counties has launched the Sacred Heart Village project. Soon, the “tiny homes” will give many homeless vets a chance to feel the sense of community they have lost and most of all, have hope for a good life.

For animals, a good life is not of their choosing. It’s up to good people like the Bausermans of Swartz Creek who created Charlie’s Forever Farm, where abused and forgotten animals get a second chance to be cared about and loved. You can help this couple, too.

We are happy to highlight my friend, Roger Sharp of Sharp Funeral Homes. A proud military veteran, he shares his thoughts about the importance of service and supporting local vets if you can. Also featured is Ashoka Rao, recent recipient of the Michigan Heritage Award for her dedication to passing on the traditional Kathak Dance of India at her school in Swartz Creek. Read about Ashoka’s prestigious recognition in “My Arts”. We have coverage of a few late fall “Haps” and much more!

In mid-October, I met with business associates from Oklahoma in my Fenton office. Upon arriving in Michigan, they were wowed by the changing leaves coloring our landscape. We spent several minutes talking about where “the prettiest tree” is and what’s the best place in MI to enjoy the fall splendor. By the time you read this, the trees could be nearly bare; but in these extremely troubled times, I think the little things like autumn leaves just hit differently.

We may have much to be thankful for and not even realize it, or perhaps, take things for granted as we’re wrapped up in daily life. Let’s remember to give thanks.

I thank you for reading and wish you a Happy & Blessed Thanksgiving!
